Suffolk at Play

We’re half way through the programme at East Point Academy, Lowestoft. At our last session before half term, we were joined by poet Dean Parkin, who led a creative writing workshop with the group. This produced some lovely anecdotes and personal recollections of games played out in the street, on the beach and in the local parks. It also produced a vivid account by an Academy member of staff of how he and his brother deliberately drove their go-cart over the edge of the cliff – for fun.

For the next six weeks the group will be very busy, making animations with Emma. Dean will join us for another creative writing session, and Julie will continue to support the reminiscence element, making memory boxes and helping with the scrapbook.

Next September, the project moves to Stradbroke, where we will be working with students from Stradbroke High School and, hopefully, members of the local Over 60’s Club; we also hope to be working alongside volunteers from Laxfield Museum to deliver part of the programme.

Rock Up

Sixteen young people have taken up the opportunity to have one-to-one tuition from Rock Up tutors since we started these sessions in January. Our regular tutors, Matt and Bryan, have tutored drumming, vocal, keyboard and guitar skills; they’ve also have posted supporting tutorials to the Suffolk Artlink YouTube page, so that the young musicians can practice at home. Meanwhile, Sophie, our DJ, has also provided one-to-one sessions for the young people to create their own mixes.

We’re hoping to hold a celebration event to coincide with the youth club annual summer barbeque, where participants will be able to entertain other young club members, and we are also planning a programme of summer activities, open to club members and other young people in the area, to take place over the holiday period.

Culture Club

We are busy planning new activities for later this year but today we are reflecting on the amazing work that our groups have produced in the past year. We’ve seen some fantastic work and the feedback we have received from groups’ members speaks for itself…
