West/Mid Suffolk

Bury St Edmunds Library

Blooming Great Tea Party for Marie Curie – Saturday 7 July from 10am to 2pm.  Drop in to the library for some tea and cake and help to raise money for Marie Curie. Bury Library would be very grateful if anyone would like to donate cake to sell or could help out on the day. Please contact the library for details.

On Wednesday 18 July, Bury and Newmarket libraries are both hosting performances by Oxford based Human Story Theatre who will be presenting ‘Connie’s Colander’, their critically-acclaimed play which breathes life, humanity and even laughs into the topic of dementia. The show is being performed at 10.30am at Newmarket Library and 3pm in Bury Library. The running time is 50 minutes and is followed by an informal 20 minute post-show Q&A with local dementia specialists. Tickets are free but donations to the theatre company are encouraged. Please contact the library to book your tickets.

 

Newmarket Library

Design your own lantern – Saturday 7 July from 10.30am to 1pm.  A chance for children to design and make their own lanterns.

The Friends of Newmarket Library are holding their AGM on Thursday 12 July at 10.30am. The Friends of Newmarket Library is looking for new people who might be interested in joining the Friends group so this would be a great opportunity to find out more. Anyone coming along will have a chance to hear what the Friends have been up to, what their plans for the future are, and how to get involved.

Newmarket Library is also looking for volunteers who may be able to help support this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. Please contact the library if you would like to help.

Also on Thursday 12 July from 10.30am Newmarket Library is holding a storytelling and craft activity session for under 12s with the Dogs Trust.

On Saturday 14 July the library is hosting a ‘From Tots to Teens’ discussion involving three authors who will be looking at why children’s literature is so important and how to engage young readers.  The event runs from 11am to 12.30pm and involves authors Gillian McClue, Pippa Goodhart and Rosemary Hayes in a panel discussion and question and answer session. Parents, grandparents, teachers and writers are particularly encouraged to come along and find out how to choose the best books for children and cultivate a love of books and reading. The authors will also be selling and signing their children’s books and displaying their artwork.

 

Brandon Library

Meet the Author: Gavin Milnthorpe on Monday 16 July from 10.45am to 12noon. Join us for an entertaining and informal morning with Gavin Milnthorpe, chatting about his books ‘Second Hand Scott’ and ‘Stanley Young is Planning a Murder’ telling stories and maybe even sharing a song or two. The event is free and tea and coffee is provided by the Friends of Brandon Library.

 

Lavenham Library

Lavenham Library are holding an event with author and historian Tracy Borman in Lavenham Village Hall on Saturday 7 July at 2.30pm. There are still some tickets left. Tracy Borman has enthralled sell-out audiences at Lavenham’s three literary festivals in the part. Her much debut novel, The King’s Witch, was published in June and she will be giving a talk on the novel in the Village Hall as a special fundraising event for The Friends of Lavenham Library. There will be an opportunity to purchase the book and, after the talk, Tracy will be signing copies and joining the audience members for tea and cake. Ticket price includes refreshments.

Lavenham Library is also hosting a free Beach Bonkers activity on Sunday 15 July from 10am to 12noon. Families are welcome to come along and find the treasures in the Beach Bonkers mini shingle beach, handle amazing artefacts including a mammoth’s tooth and play a giant beachcombing board game.  There will also be a chance to sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge ahead of the summer holidays.

 

Long Melford Library are also hosting a similar Beach Bonkers and summer reading challenge activity on Sunday 15 July from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

 

Glemsford Library are holding a Mini Comic-Con – on Saturday 14 July from 12pm.
Join us for an afternoon of comics, gaming, sci-fi, fantasy, Star Wars and lots of fun. Dressing up and cosplay is encouraged.

The event will also be the first chance for children to sign up to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge which has the theme of the Beano. The library is very excited to have Barrie Appleby, Beano illustrator at the event and there will be a chance to meet him from 12.30pm to 1pm and win one of his original illustrations.

There will also be a Jedi Training Camp, a magnificent paper airplane challenge, a chance to meet a dalek, retro gaming with Bring Back Retro, X-Wing game demonstrations, Koala Bear Books and a sale of good quality pre-owned sci-fi and fantasy books and collectibles. Tickets are just £1.

 

Eye Library are holding a colouring for all sessions making mandalas on Sunday 8 July at 10.30am.

The Friends of Stowmarket Library are holding a quiz night on Friday 13 July at 8pm. Tickets are £6 and teams of up to 6 are invited to test their knowledge and raise money for the library. You can book you place by contacting the library or emailing [email protected]

Lowestoft Library

OneLife Suffolk are holding free 30-minute NHS health checks for 40-74 year-olds on Friday 6 July from 10am to 4pm. The Friends of Lowestoft Library are holding a coffee morning and book sale on Saturday 14 July from 10am to 1pm. Drop in to the library to enjoy some light refreshments, find out more about the Friends of Lowestoft Library and pick up some bargain books.

 

Halesworth Library

Halesworth Library are holding an evening of poetry, prose and play readings from Halesworth writers next Wednesday (4 July) at 7.30pm. Enjoy poetry, prose and play readings from talented local writers while raising money for the Friends of Halesworth Library. Tickets are £5.

Halesworth Library will also be hosting a display from the Halesworth to Southwold Narrow Gauge Railway Society from Tuesday 17 July to Monday 30 July. The display will provide more information about the society’s proposal to reinstate Halesworth’s narrow gauge railway.

 

Ipswich, Kesgrave and Felixstowe

Ipswich County Library’s regular Sporting Memories group is welcoming Mark Ling, the Chairman of the Broomhill Pool Trust next Tuesday (3 July) at 2.15pm. Mark will be giving a a special presentation and Q&A about the history of the Broomhill swimming pool and how architects propose to restore it. It’s also a great opportunity for people to share their memories of the pool.

Just a reminder that it’s Ipswich County Library’s annual multicultural day tomorrow (Saturday 30 June) from 10.30 to 3.30pm.

Next Saturday (7 July) Top Norwich band The Vagaband are playing at Ipswich County Library. They play a mixture of Americana, folk and acoustic rock with a sprinkling of country, blues and soul. Tickets are £8 and available from the library and website.

 

Kesgrave Library are launching this year’s Summer Reading Challenge with a Paw Patrol party on Sunday 22 July from 10am to 12pm. Sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge and come dressed as your favourite cartoon character. Meet Marshall from Paw Patrol and enjoy cartoon-themed crafts, a tombola, cakes, refreshments and a cartoon-inspired raffle.

For the next three weekends Kesgrave Library are holding several events with craft sessions and a chance to swap Panini FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 stickers from 10am to 12noon.

This Sunday (1 July) it’s 3D ocean crafts, on Sunday 8 July you can make a crab collage and on 15 July it’s monster crafts with a chance to swap stickers at these events too.

Felixstowe Library is holding a crime prevention information drop-in on Tuesday 17 July from 10am to 12pm where everyone is free to come along and get tips about how to avoid becoming a victim of crime and to discuss any concerns.
