Suffolk Show launches first ever App for visitors

The Suffolk Show has been at the heart of the county for almost 200 years and this year, for the first time, show organisers the Suffolk Agricultural Association have launched the very first smartphone App for visitors.

The App was created through a collaboration between BT, West Suffolk College and the Suffolk Agricultural Association. Smart Networked Environments, a member of Innovation Martlesham Business Club, developed the app with generous funding from Suffolk County Council.

Not only will the App be a valuable resource for show visitors, but it will also highlight the importance of technology in everyday life today, as well as inspiring young people in Suffolk to develop the technical skills and confidence that they will need to succeed in the future.

The App is a fully interactive, location-aware mobile app and it features useful information and ideas to help visitors plan their day, including a detailed map of the Show, ring timetables, information on individual trade stands, and public transport timetables to and from the showground. The free-to-download App will help every visitor make the most of their day and will showcase how technology affects every element of the Suffolk Show, from animals and farming to fashion and flowers.

Using the new Show App, visitors can also take part in a fun interactive Treasure. Created by Chronicle Storytelling – also a member of the Innovation Martlesham Business Club – the trail features seven interactive points where visitors can use a smartphone to learn and discover more about a specific display, which will be great fun for all the family.

The Treasure Trail is themed around ‘looking back, looking forward’ and will give visitors a greater insight and personal perspective behind some of the Show’s displays. Everyone who completes the trail will be entered into a draw to win some exciting prizes, including an iPad donated by Hughes Electrical, a holiday in Aldeburgh donated by Suffolk Hideaways and a chance to enjoy coffee and cake at the top of the BT Tower in London. A paper version of the trail will be available in the Show programme for younger visitors or those without access to a smartphone.

Commenting on the new App, Bee Kemball, Show Director said: “We are thrilled to launch our first ever Show App for visitors. There is so much to see and do at the show, we hope the app will make planning and enjoying the day easier.

“It has been great working so closely with our partners to develop the concept of the App and be able to offer these exciting interactive features to our visitors.”

Prof Tim Whitley, BT, commented: “The Suffolk Show is one of the most popular events in the county and our ambition is to highlight the exciting technology from Adastral Park, but also how it underpins the Suffolk Economy.”

Another first for the Suffolk Show this year is the BT Marquee, which will showcase innovative technology alongside hands-on activities in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and computing.  It will inspire young people across the county to explore the variety of opportunity in STEM subjects and how technology impacts everyday life.

Visitors to the BT Marquee at the Suffolk Show can take part in challenges using programmable Beebot robots, 360 Virtual-Reality (VR) experiences, a multi-screen sport experience, and a small-scale Lego city showing the potential of how the internet can make our towns and cities smarter and how this can be transferred to the agricultural community.

The Suffolk Show App will be available to download from the Apple App Store and Google Play from Tuesday 1 May.

Visitors are encouraged to download the App before travelling to the Show.
