SUFFRAGETTE POSTERS

Words and Women in partnership with Norwich City Council is postering the centre of Norwich purple, white and green to celebrate the centenary of women getting the vote.

The posters, designed by Vicki Johnson, feature quotes from both local and national figures with a connection to our region.  Millicent Garrett Fawcett, Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, Annie Reeves and Miriam Pratt (both of Norwich ), represent the thousands of women involved in the struggle for suffrage.

The posters are being launched now, during National Democracy Week, (2nd-8th July), and they are going up in shops community centres, local businesses, schools and colleges, as well as in libraries throughout Norfolk.

‘Norwich had some outstanding women who fought with passion for the vote so they could make a better world,’ said Belona Greenwood, co-organiser of Words and Women. ‘Women like Miriam Pratt, a teacher at Norwich High School For Girls who risked her job, reputation, and faced the torture of force-feeding in Holloway Prison, for what she believed in.’

If anyone would like posters for their shop, business, school or college please email [email protected]

Art prints of the posters are on sale to raise money for Women’s Aid.  See www.wordsandwomennorwich.blogspot.co.uk for more details and are on sale from The Book Hive on London Street.
