The FESPA* Summer Theatre Fete, for years a regular fixture at the Westons Stables in Walberswick, is this year moving to the William Godell Pavilion on Southwold Common. It is hoped that the new, more spacious, more accessible and more visible location will attract even larger numbers of holiday visitors as well as all the loyal regulars. Special attraction in the Rugby Pavilion will be a visit by the famous AVIVA Premiership Rugby Union Cup.  A great photo op!

This year’s event, for the Friends charity that supports the Summer Theatres, will be opened as ever by Lady Freud. It promises a winning mix of stalls and family entertainments including a proper Punch & Judy show, bouncy castle, wet-sponge stocks, lucky dip, a fantastic range of games, tombola, bottle stall and a great programme of entertainment from the Music Vox Choir and the beguiling Lowestoft Signing Choir. Rosemary, the internationally renowned clairvoyant, psychic and tarot reader will be paying a return visit and the climax of the day will be the Grand Draw with dozens of fabulous prizes donated by local businesses.

The fete opens an hour earlier this year – at noon – when the Pavilion bar will be open and there will be home-made lunchtime snacks available for the first time. Later the famous Theatre Fete tea shop opens with cakes galore, and strawberries & cream in the Pavilion where, as it’s Wimbledon Mens’ Finals day, the big TV will be on.

Plus – there will be all the favourite attractions that bring families to the Theatre Fete year after year… an art gallery with many amazing bargains, a mini garden centre, a well-stocked bookshop, a toyshop, a cake stall, jams and pickles, quality bric-a-brac, tombola, bottle stall, the ‘Hi-Spirits’ stall with draws taking place throughout the afternoon, an ice cream stall and loads more.

Fete organiser, Ben Marriner, says: “This is the start of a new era for the fete which is FESPA’s most important fund-raising event. We are greatly indebted to Richard Curtis and Emma Freud for making us so welcome for so many years, and we are also hugely grateful to the Pavilion management for generously offering us this terrific new site at no cost.”

*The Theatre fete is organised by the Registered Charity, Friends of East Suffolk Performing Arts (FESPA). This is FESPA’s biggest fund-raising event of the year. Proceeds go not only to subsidising the Southwold and Aldeburgh Summer Theatres, but also to encouraging the development of the performing arts generally throughout the East Suffolk area. The charity awards a number of bursaries each year to local young people embarking on courses in the performing arts.
