The Forum, Norwich, has been shortlisted in two categories at The Energy Awards 2019 for reducing its energy consumption through an innovative smart LED lighting system.
The Eye-Wi system has been operational in The Forum’s 209-space car park since July 2018, and works by automatically brightening lights when cars approach and switching off when no movement is detected.
Over the past year, the project has delivered an 80% reduction in energy consumption saving £7,198 – equating to a C02 reduction of over 27 tonnes per year.
The installation was possible with a £23,000 grant from the Business Energy Efficiency (BEE) Anglia project, which helps businesses reduce carbon and save money with funding from the European Regional Development Fund.
The Forum Trust, the independent self-financing charity which manages The Forum building, has been shortlisted for both the Lighting Energy Impact Award and the Public Building Energy Project of the Year.
The Energy Awards celebrate excellence and provide a platform for businesses to be recognised for intelligent use of energy, with The Forum facing competition from other nominees such as Heathrow Airport and Marks and Spencer.
Teresa Wood, Head of Estates at The Forum, said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for two awards and to receive recognition for our ongoing work to ensure the building continues to use the latest environmentally friendly and cost effective systems.
“The Eye-Wi control system provides us with the maximum benefits in both those areas and it has proved so successful that another phase was commissioned to replace lighting within The Forum plant room and other low traffic back of house areas.
“The third phase of the lighting project will see all external lighting replaced and reconfigured to maximise energy efficiency.”
The savings made will be invested back into The Forum’s programme of free events and activities including Norwich Science Festival, Norwich Gaming Festival, Heritage Open Days and Makers’ Month.
The Energy Awards take place on 21 November at London Hilton on Park Lane, with comedian Miles Jupp as the host.
