Hound Within The Heart

Common Ground Theatre Company

The Hound Within The Heart

by Pat Whymark

Touring East Anglia – 30th May to 15th June 2019

Following last year’s acclaimed production of The Mariner

“a fascinating reimagining” “a hypnotic, disturbing vocal and instrumental score…Sharp harmonies and eerie sounds create almost as much atmosphere as the poem itself “

Common Ground present a play with music about the life and loves of American poetic genius, Emily Dickinson.

One of the greatest & most loved of American poets, the reclusive “Belle of Amherst”, continues to be an elusive figure. In The Hound Within The Heart, we shatter the myth of Emily as a virginal neurotic, and present her as a fierce, brilliant and sexually charged writer in charge of her own destiny.

Was there a secret love in her life? What was the explosive event in her past that “stopped… existence”?

A “wild woman of words”, deeply philosophical, intensely engaged with the world, and able to write poetry that disturbs and delights us today. “My life has stood – a loaded gun”, she wrote. Told in her own words, and with the haunting music of Pat Whymark, this is a story of genius in the process of formation and in the act of overwhelming production.

We hope to inspire audiences to go to her poetry with a greater understanding of why she still works a spell in our own time. Cast includes Julian Harries, Emily Bennett and Janeena Sims as Emily.
