The Neutrinos record and release new tune under lockdown
‘Come on everybody put your lips together.’
In response to Covid19, Norfolk’s art-rock mavericks The Neutrinos recorded and released a new song tackling life under crisis.
‘You Can’t Hum Your Way Out of This One’ was originally written for a proposed new incarnation of the band’s acclaimed, site responsive KlangHaus show, to be performed at the UN Climate Conference, CoP26, to be held in Glasgow in November 2020.
Like many other events the conference has sadly been postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. But the band felt that the current situation gave the song a new relevancy, so while largely confined to their respective homes decided to record the song. Observing social distancing each recorded their own parts and shared the files digitally, which were mixed by band member Jon Baker.
Described by the band as ‘outer space retro futurist electro’, ‘You Can’t Hum Your Way Out of This One’ features an infectiously relaxed rhythmic motorik dance beat, melody galore and Reilly’s warm and inspiringly confident vocal. A song that’s not only for our time but actually of it.
‘We did write it a couple of months ago in the shadow of, and in response to, another worldwide crisis, namely accelerating climate change’ explained singer Karen Reilly ‘but then when the pandemic took hold and the conference was postponed it struck us how relevant it sounded as a call for people to come together, pull together.’
The full length remix weighs in at 6 minutes 22 seconds although a more radio friendly 2:55 version is also available.
‘It’s a song of great optimism in troubled times.’ added Jon Baker ‘In lockdown you can’t physically expand your horizons but can in your imagination. And this has been an interesting way of working with everyone contributing separately’.
‘At times of great stress many of us like to hum a little tune as a sort of audible first line of defence, one that distracts and calms the nervous system’ said guitarist/vocalist Mark Howe ‘we hope this is that sort of tune’.
KlangHaus has over 100 sell-out London Royal Festival Hall shows under its belt. The band has performed their ‘sexy urgent energy’ (Time Out New York) in New York, around Canada, mainland Europe and numerous UK dates.
Hailed as’ total game changers‘ by The Guardian and ‘truly outstanding’ by The Daily Telegraph, The Neutrinos were writing a new recreation of KlangHaus for CoP26 when the postponement hit. ‘Obviously it’s disappointing’ Karen said ‘but we do hope to be able to take the show to Glasgow when it’s rescheduled’.
Released as a download on Wet Nurse Records via Shellshock today, 12 June 2020.
Their irrepressibly adventurous nature has led them to perform on boats, in complete darkness at The Sainsbury Centre gallery, in a former horse hospital, a bus depot, a disused small animal hospital, a former Inland Revenue Office and a vast furniture depository. They have made appearances at the Bloomsbury Festival and the Festival of Love in London, Manchester/Liverpool’s In The City music convention, North by North East, Toronto, Exit Festival in Serbia and Norfolk & Norwich Festival. They have recorded in Berlin’s legendary Funkhaus and their music has been used for underground film soundtracks and throughout the feature length Channel 4 documentary The Trials of Amanda Knox.
