THI Community Play

Through Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s Townscape Heritage Initiative Scheme supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, SeaChange Arts are producing a community led piece of theatre to be staged at the newly renovated St George’s Theatre October 2012.

The artistic element of the THI Scheme, managed by SeaChange Arts, aims to creatively document and celebrate with community involvement the physical changes to the street and the memories, stories and experiences of the people that live, work and shop there.

The community play will be staged at the newly renovated St George’s Theatre on Sunday 14th October 2012 2.30pm. The play is entitled Café de Sonhos and was written by regional playwright Belona Greenwood. Set on the vibrant and lively King Street, Café de Sonhos or ‘Café of Dreams’ tells the story of the people who live on and around this historic street. Jo, a taxi driver and resident, knows King Street like the back of her hand. With Jo we are introduced to Amelia and the Café de Sonhos. The play features real life interviews from people who were born in Great Yarmouth and those who have moved to the area and made it their home.

Director Thom Bailey states that, ‘the reason behind this piece is simply to unify and engage residents through stories that are unique to this area. The rehearsal and creative process both on and behind the stage are just as important as the finished project; we are aiming to create a wonderful all-encompassing piece of live art.’

An initial meeting and drama workshop is to be held on Sunday 1st July 2012 at 2pm and to be held in the Drill Hall, York Road for anyone interested in this exciting project. SeaChange Arts and St George’s Theatre are looking for community players to be cast in the play and to be part of the creative process.

Rehearsals are to start on the week commencing Mon. 9th July 2012. All are welcome and no prior performance experience is required, just a keen interest, an enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved.

If you are interested in being involved in the community play and for an application form please contact Director Thomas Bailey by email [email protected] or by calling 01493 745461 EXT 206.
