Trustees sought to sustain Marina Theatre

A new charitable organisation, which will ensure the long-term sustainability of the award-winning Marina Theatre in Lowestoft, is seeking trustees.

The Trustees will form the Governing Board of the newly formed Marina Theatre Trust, which will take over the running of the Edwardian theatre, currently operated by Waveney District Council. The Trust aims to continue delivering a diverse range of cultural entertainment, building on the venue’s success in recent years. In time, there is potential to extend the Trust’s activities to other cultural and tourism facilities and services within the district, and beyond.

High calibre individuals are invited to apply to join the Board of Trustees, representing a fantastic opportunity for people with a connection to the area, and a passion for the development of good quality theatre and cultural services, to be part of this exciting forward-thinking organisation.

Waveney District Council’s Cabinet took the decision to allow the formation of the Trust in March and the authority aims to have a shadow board in place by mid July, as it moves towards a hand over in the autumn. Following a successful bid by the theatre’s current management, supported by the independent Friends of The Marina Theatre, permission has been granted to establish a 15-year partnership management agreement.

Board positions are voluntary, though reasonable expenses will be paid, and being a Trustee is a high profile, governing role. The Marina Theatre has been at the cultural heart of north Suffolk for over 100 years and each year the economic benefit to the local community runs into several million pounds.

Theatre manager Martin Halliday said: “Forming the Marina Theatre Trust is an excellent way to safeguard the future of what is, without doubt, the cultural jewel in the district’s crown, setting the scene for the next 15 years and ensuring the high standard of entertainment and arts provision enjoyed in recent years continues, and evolves in a sustainable way.”

Those interested in becoming a Trustee can attend an open evening on June 16 at the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft from 6:30pm. To confirm you attendance please email [email protected]. Trustee application packs will be available from mid June and can be downloaded from Waveney District Council’s website – www.waveney.gov.uk.

Alternatively, you can email [email protected].
