12 Towers Festival

Some of Norfolk’s finest young musicians will be performing in Aylsham Parish Church on Saturday 3rd June to herald the start of the Twelve Towers Festival, a month-long series of events celebrating the communities in and around Aylsham.

The Norfolk County Symphonic Windband is a 50 strong ensemble of young brass, woodwind and percussion players ranging in age from 11-18, conducted by David Stowell and run by the County Music Service which is the lead organisation in the Norfolk Music Hub. Players have to be Grade 6-8 level to join so the standard of playing is extremely high.   In April the band competed in the Festival of Music for Youth at Snape Maltings and made it through to the next round which will take place in Birmingham in July.  Success in this round could mean a performance at the Royal Albert Hall.

Their musical director, David Stowell, is a distinguished composer and conductor of some of the world’s best brass bands including Grimethorpe and the Black Dyke Mills Band.

He said ‘We are really looking forward to performing in Aylsham Church and have an exciting programme planned.  There will be music from John Williams, and the musical Wicked as well as some of the best contemporary music for windband from composers such as Rob Wiffen, Director of Music for the RAF.’

The concert is free and starts at 7.30pm and will be a great opportunity to hear some very talented young people.

The Twelve Towers Festival is a month-long celebration of the communities in and around Aylsham.  It will showcase a varied array of events – ranging from heritage, culture and the arts; to spirituality, community and family fun.

The aims of the Festival are to give people opportunities to discover more about themselves and their communities, to affirm our rich and diverse heritage and culture of rural Norfolk and to celebrate the relationships and partnerships which support rural communities.
