The Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail will return to south Norfolk for five weeks August and September.
Annually attracting thousands of visitors to the region, this year’s trail will feature the work of 38 artists from across the UK.
Organised by Waveney & Blyth Arts, the event takes place at The Raveningham Centre, ten miles south of Norwich, on a three-acre site of lawns, hidden groves, orchards and walkways.
Now in its sixth year, this year’s trail will feature a host of work offering a feast for the eyes and ears including site-specific work, 3-D constructions, sculpture and sound installations.
An installation by Laura Cannell and Polly Wright involves vivid telephone receivers set amongst the trees on which visitors will be able to hear tracks from their new albumSing as the Crow Flies which was created at Raveningham Church.
Earlier this month, Sing as the Crow Flies – the duo’s debut vocal album – was The Guardian’s folk album of the week.
In it, the composers and performers re-voice the voices of the lost, forgotten and hidden people who have lived, worked and loved through the centuries in the rural landscape, surrounding reed beds and marshes on the Norfolk/Suffolk border.
Growing up on either side of the River Yare, with a common love of the area, Laura and Polly share deep roots in the marshes and traditions of this rural area.
Polly Wright said: “I am very excited that my new musical collaboration with LauraCannell features as part of this year’s sculpture trail.
“It was wonderful creating experimental music in the haunting acoustics of Raveningham Church, responding to our beloved local marshland landscapes and the folklore and atmosphere which is entrenched so deeply within them.”
Accompanying this installation are cascades of pom poms within the treescape created by Boudicca’s Women, led by Laura Cannell.
Each year Waveney & Blyth Arts hosts a programme of events that highlights the unique character of the Waveney and Blyth valleys situated in north Suffolk and south Norfolk.
Both established and up-and-coming artists have explored the theme of The Woven Woodland for this year’s sculpture trail using materials, structures and creative ideas in the meadows, woodland and natural spaces at Raveningham.
Nicky Stainton from Waveney & Blyth Arts said: “We are so excited about this year’sTrail as almost half the artists are showing work with us for the first time.
“The site has also extended and both these elements will mean that it will be a different experience for visitors. We are also happy to welcome back some of the artists from previous years and know that there is a lot of fascinating and beautiful work being created behind the scenes.”
The Trail, which drew almost 4,000 visitors in 2018, is curated again by Sarah Cannell. She said: “I am delighted to be curating the sculpture trail again. My overall vision is to continue to encourage public interaction with contemporary art in a rural setting.”
Most artwork on the trail will be available for sale and there will be a pop-up gallery in the farmhouse showing prints, paintings, textiles and ceramics.
The trail runs from Friday 2 August until Sunday 8 September and is open every day from 10am until 5pm at The Raveningham Centre, Beccles Road, Raveningham, Norfolk NR14 6NU.
Entry is £6 for adults (£5 members of Waveney & Blyth Arts), under 18s are free. Pay on entry only and well behaved dogs on leads are welcome.
There is plentiful free parking and designated disabled parking. Toilets are wheelchair accessible and have nappy changing facilities. A mobility scooter will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for a small donation. It is also possible to book one to meet your specific needs by calling Norfolk Mobility Scooters on 01603 784474, for an agreed charge.
The Ravenous Café will be open every day for light lunches, drinks, cakes, and home- made refreshments, and will feature an exhibition of textiles by Helen Howes and Helen Butcher.
Additional activities taking place include a curator’s guided walk, a BSL guided walk and a concert.
