Saffron Walden may have been 14 points above Wold in the league before the start of this game but that counted for nothing when the whistle blew and the game got under way.

Wold were at it from the start and it was less than three minutes before they broke from their own 22 up the right wing and Ollie Carlstroem sprinted in for a try in the right hand corner. When Luke Wades conversion attempt started off towards the posts and the wind took it to the corner flag on the other side of the pitch. It was clear the massive wind was going to make kicking nearly impossible for all but Wold had their five point lead.

Walden bounced a penalty kick off the crossbar for three points ten minutes before half time but up until then Wold had continued to dominate without adding points. Just before half time Josh Wallis went over for a fine score in the corner for Wold’s second try and the score was 10- 3 to Wold at the break despite battling in to the wind for the first forty minutes.

Early in the second half Wold were camped five meteres out and Walden were adjudged oiffside. James Hall took the penalty before anyone could blink and ran in for Wold’s third this time slotted by Wase for the two extra points with the wind behind him.

On 55 minutes Cemil Duruk crashed over for Wold’s fourth and bonus point try as Walden struggled to get out of their half and Wold piled on the pressure.

Almost comically when Sam Webb had to come off with a back spasm Gavin Starks came on as sub only to go off 30 seconds later as he was yellow carded for handling in the ruck and Wold were down to 14 matching Walden who had a succession of injuries and were also now down to 14 only having brought two subs but did score a good forwards driving try in the left hand corner to bring the score back to 22 – 8.

Ten minutes before time Walden tried to run the ball in their own 22 and great wold defence forced them back to ground the ball over their own line. From the resulting Wold scrum Dean Basson at 8 fed Chippy Middleditch at 9 who dummied and jinked striaght over for Wold’s fifth who went back to a 19 point lead at 27 – 8.

Walden did not give up and bravely scored again with an almost identical forwards drive in the same corner but Wold went straight back down the other end with a great break down the left wing and it was that man Middleditch who went over for his second of the day to make the score at the close 34 – 13.

It was a very good day at the office for Wold and mention must be made of great debuts for Dean Basson and Jonah Cunningham and a terrific defensive performance from Matt Warren at 7 who was simply on fire in the tackle. Moreover five very vital points on the board helping to secure Wold’s place in London 2 North East for next season.

MOM for Wold, Chippy Middleditch with two poachers trys.
