World Book Day is coming to Suffolk!

This Thursday (6 March) is World Book Day and libraries and schools in Suffolk will be playing their part in the biggest celebration of books and reading in the world.

World Book Day is celebrated in over 100 countries and aims to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. Last year over 1.2 million World Book Day book tokens were redeemed.

Every child in full time education will be receiving a £1 book token so they can get one of the World Book Day books. Children who attend regular Bookstart library sessions in Suffolk Libraries will also be able to get a token from the library.

Suffolk Libraries will be getting involved with several events next week (these are all on Thursday 6 March unless otherwise stated):

Lakenheath Library – The Friends of Lakenheath Library are providing Mr Gum and Winnie the Pooh activity packs and colouring sheets which children can pick up from the library.

Mildenhall Library are hosting a day of stories with storyteller Jim Kavanagh who will be entertaining Year One and pre-school children from St Mary’s Primary School with an animal related theme. He will then be hosting a public session from 2pm with the title of ‘Aulde Tales’ working with the library’s Top Timers’ group. This session is open to anyone over the age of 8.

At Gainsborough Community Library in Ipswich, the library’s volunteers have organised a series of challenges for children including a quiz, introducing a friend to the library, making a comic strip, and designing a book cover. Children have all week to complete these challenges for the chance to win a prize and there is also a huge wall display in the library.

At Ipswich County Library there will be a special interactive Goldilocks and the Three Bears fun storytime session at 10.30am on Thursday.

This will be a chance for children and families to pop into the library to celebrate World Book Day in the library after school and before bedtime. Pyjamas are welcome! The library is also holding story sessions with local schoolchildren throughout the day but the evening session is open to anyone.

Bury St Edmunds Library are creating a World Book Day tree and offering customers with the chance to add their own ‘leaves’ with their favourite author or book on.
