EXHIBITION ABOUT PLANTING TREES INSPIRES EVENTS FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS IN HALESWORTH

Children’s author Nicola Davies will be in Halesworth Library on Wednesday 16 April 2104 for a morning session with the Library’s Time Out group and an afternoon session of storytelling and craft activities for children.

The events have been organised by conservation charity World Land Trust (WLT), which is holding an exhibition about Nicola Davies’s recent book, The Promise, in WLT gallery in Bridge Street, Halesworth from 15 March–25 April 2014.

Nicola Davies author

The Promise tells the story of a girl who plants trees all over the grey, run down city where she lives, at the same time transforming herself and her environment. The Promise is a simple story with an important message about our power to transform ourselves and the world around us. The exhibition will display some of the book’s original illustrations by Laura Carlin.

“Trees help us to reconnect with nature and to remember our place in the world. Planting a tree is a symbol of new beginnings and of a desire to make the future better than the present,” said Nicola Davies, who is a WLT Ambassador. “I hope that The Promise will inspire a new generation of tree planters, because now more than ever we need trees – trees in cities to provide shade and inspiration, trees in forests to maintain biodiversity, trees everywhere to help soak up carbon dioxide.”

Nicola and Laura will be signing copies of The Promise in WLT gallery on Saturday
15 March 11am-2pm. Nicola and Laura will also be taking part in an event for pupils of Edgar Sewter Primary School, involving a reading from The Promise and – weather permitting – a trip to Millennium Green on the morning of 19 March. Laura will be in residence at WLT gallery in the afternoons of Tuesday 18 March and Wednesday 19 March.

Nicola Davies is the author of picture books and children’s books (both fiction and nonfiction). Some of the inspiration for The Promise came from another famous story, The Man Who Planted Trees, written by French author Jean Giono and first published in 1953. The fictional story of a French peasant who plants trees across a desert region of southern France had a huge international impact, inspiring real tree planting and encapsulating the spirit of the emerging environmental movement. Nicola’s Whale Boy, published in April 2013, was shortlisted for the Blue Peter Book Awards 2014. Her latest book is Frozen Solid at Silver Street Farm.
