A weekend of World Music at Ipswich Library

Ipswich County Library will be celebrating its fifth free World Music Festival this month with two days of music and dance.

Everyone is welcome to enjoy a series of wide ranging music performances on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October at the library in Northgate Street.Both days will feature performances representing the music and dance of different countries, cultures, styles and traditions.

Events on Saturday 19 October 2013 will run from 11am to 4.30pm and will feature morris dancing, Peruvian dance, bellydancing, folk, samba and funk music.  On Sunday 20 October the performances will run from 10.30am to 3pm and will include The Chinese Children’s Choir, Indian classical dance, French folk songs, bagpipes and street dance. There will also be crafts and food stalls.

Over the past few years staff at Ipswich Library have been working to engage the local community in the library and there have been several World Music events and a popular annual multicultural event which attracted over 3,000 visitors in June.  For more information about the event contact the library on 01473 263810

Celebrating Black History Month at Ipswich Library

An evening of African and Caribbean poetry, song and storytelling is taking place at Ipswich Library next week to celebrate Black History Month. The free event is running from 6pm to 9pm on Tuesday 22 October.

The event will include uplifting performance poetry, song and storytelling. There will also be delicious cultural snacks on sale and an opportunity to view a selection of the resources Suffolk Libraries has available on African and Caribbean history and find out more about related books in the library catalogue.

The library is working in partnership with the organisers of Black History Month in Suffolk (Karibu, African Cultural Forum, Suffolk Portuguese Community Health Project and some of the church communities to promote African and Caribbean history and culture.
