Wymondham 7 – 26 Southwold
Wold began the game from the whistle full of confidence and playing like a team at the top of the league, and Wymondham barely touched the ball before they conceded the first try 14 minutes in to the game. It came from a lineout on the Wymondham 22 metre line when Sam Webb caught the ball at the back of the line and the pack gathered around him to drive forward. The drive made ten metres and then the ball came out to Callum Anthony at fly half who broke the defensive line before smartly offloading with a reverse pass to skipper James Hall who sprinted in for a great opening try. Josh Wallis duly converted from the right hand side of the posts and Wold had a deserved seven point lead.
The game continued in a similar manner for the next five minutes with Wold having all the possession and driving Wymondham backwards. Wold gained a great attacking position in the centre of the pitch on 20 minutes in the Wymondham 22 and their second try looked imminent. Chippy Middleditch at No 9 broke from the back of the ruck but was well tackled and the ball popped loose. It was gathered by the Wymondham forwards and was quickly spun down the line to the left winger who ran at great pace right down the touchline, beating James Bartons tackle attempt as he slipped in the mud and the winger rounded the end of the pitch to touch down under the posts. It was a great individual try against the run of play but with the conversion successful it evened up the score at 7-7 and Wold suddenly knew they were in a game and Wymondham would not be simply rolled over.
The try inspired Wymondham who had a good spell of possession in the game and kicked intelligently for territory, but the Wold defence stood strong.
The Wold pack began to dominate every scrum following the tactical introduction of Chris Aldous at hooker with James hall dropping back to the back row, and the revised front row of Smith, Aldous and Brett were too hot for their opponents to handle.
On the half hour Wold won good ball from a scrum and Callum Anthony at fly half popped a beautiful kick over the Wymondham line which James Barton sprinted on to and caught on the full just in his own half and sprinted clear to score under the posts Great kills and with Wallis again easily taking the extra two point it was then 7-14 in Wold’s favour.
Wold then had another spell of domination but it took almost until half time and another touch of brilliance from Callum Anthoiny for them to add to their score. Another great kick over the Wymondham line this time saw Ollie Carlstrom catch the ball on the full and he sprinted 20metres before he offloaded back to Callum Anthony who sprinted in under the posts for another great try. Wallis again obliged with the conversion and the score at half time was 7 – 21 to Wold.
The second half was more of a dire affair with the heavy pitch and wet conditions gradually taking a heavy toll on both sides, as the game became a bit of an error strewn brawl, but it must be said Wold were always on top and it was only a question of time before the fourth try came along with the bonus point that came with it.
The fourth Wold try took until the 72nd minute but what a good try it was, this time from the forwards. Wold were camped ten metres from the Wymiondham line right under the posts. There were a great series of pick and go drives and then the ball was spun out wide to flanker Jobe Brookes who crashed forward through the Wymondham defensive line and then offloaded brilliantly to debutant Miulo Cawkwell who scored right in the corner to secure the valuable bonus point.
Wallis narrowly missed the conversion and the score remained at 7 – 26 until the final whistle with five valuable points secured as Wold kept pace with their top of the table rivals Stowmarket who also had a five point win, 19 – 24 at Wisbech, to keep the teams level on 60 points a piece at the top of London 3 Eastern Counties.
MOM Jobe Brookes for a great all round performance, and tenacious tackling, but also a special mention for Callum Anthony who had another great game
