Wymondham Words, Festival of literature, poetry, drama, conversation and music 

The sixth Wymondham Words Festival of literature, poetry, drama, conversation and music returns from 8 to 21October, www.wymwords.co.uk.

The diverse programme features a celebration of Jane Austen, a poetry supper, a literary lunch, talks from award-winning writers and a selection of children’s events.

Moniza Alvi, co-director, Wymondham Words Festival explained: “We are delighted to announce an expanded Festival spread over two weeks and taking place in a variety of fine venues in the town. We are also heading out of town for an eagerly anticipated event in the elegant setting of Kimberley Hall on 13 October at 7.30pm (ticket £10, under 18 £6). Actor Hannah Lee will feature in a costumed performance of ‘Jane Austen at Home’, a celebration of Jane Austen’s writing, wit and wisdom.”

Other Festival highlights include Guardian journalist and nature writer Patrick Barkham talking about his latest book Coastlines (Town Green Centre, 8 October at 7.30pm, £3), an evening with Rory Clements, author of the John Shakespeare series of Tudor spy thrillers (Kett’s Books, Wymondham’s flourishing Community Bookshop, 9 October at 5.30pm, free) and a Literary Lunch with two of Norfolk’s most admired biographers and poets, Ann and Anthony Thwaite (Number 24 Restaurant, 15 October at 12noon, £30).

‘Eastern Gothic’ (Wymondham Baptist Church, 18 October at 2.30pm, £7.50) features Edward Parnell and Sarah Perry discussing their prize-winning debut novels. ‘Not Lost in Translation’ (Wymondham Library, 20 October at 7.30pm, £7.50) is an event with translator Don Bartlett (whose work includes Jo Nesbø and Karl Ove Knausgård) and the prize-winning French-language translator, Adriana Hunter.

There will be a poetry supper evening at The Green Dragon with outstanding poets Chris Beckett and Tom Warner, plus an open mic session, (21 October at 7.30pm, ticket £7.50) and local writers Four by Four present eight new radio-style plays (Fairland Church Centre, 19 October at 7.30pm, £6).

Children’s events include ‘Prehistoric Monsters Come Alive!’ for 6-11 years, led by author Steve Parker (Wymondham Library, 10 October at 2pm, £3 per child or £5 family ticket on the door) and Family Film Club, ‘Where the Wild Things’ Are (Wymondham High Studio Theatre, 17 October, 10.30am, free, reserve tickets at www.wymondhamcluster.org).

Wymondham Abbey is hosting two family events later in October. On Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 October, Ben Greenwood creates a ‘Wild Word Orchestra’ for 6-11 year-olds (10am-3pm each day, ticket £25 for both days). Then on 30 October, ‘Time, Light and Space’ is a family poetry workshop led by Phil Barrett (10.30am-12.30pm, ticket £5 per family group).
