Special Flute and Recorder Concert

Friday 1st November 2013 at 7.30pm

Methodist Church, East Green, Southwold

A lively and unique concert featuring flutes and recorders will take place on Friday 1st November at 7.30pm to raise money towards the continued running of Southwold Library. Tickets (£5) are now on sale from Southwold Library Tel: 01502 722519. This concert will be a very special musical event because it features two flute choirs: Waveney Flutes and Dorking Flutes performing together as a combined flute choir for the first time. Please come along and help your local musicians support Suffolk’s smallest local library.

For local music lovers, especially flute and recorder players – children and adults, this concert offers a fantastic opportunity to see and hear different sizes of flutes and recorders presenting a rich diversity of musical styles – from classical to jazz, including: Finale from the William Tell Overture, Blue Danube, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Calon Lan (Welsh sports anthem) and the popular Sailor’s Hornpipe

The concert marks the culmination of a visit by ‘Dorking Flutes’ from Surrey to share in music-making workshops and rehearsals with ‘Waveney Flutes’ – a local community flute choir based in Beccles. The flute choirs will be joined in the concert by a local recorder ensemble ‘Flauti Dolci’. Dorking Flutes are bringing a bass flute – an instrument not often heard in concerts and Waveney Flutes will add a sparkle to their performance with a mandolin, bodhran drum, Indian bells and penny whistle.

To support local musicians, Jonathan Myall from ‘Just Flutes’ in Croydon is bringing a selection of flute and recorder music for all ages and abilities, plus instruments and Christmas musical gifts, to sell from 2.00pm to 7.30pm and during the interval. The sale will be in Southwold Methodist Church Hall on 1st November.

This concert has been organised by Waveney Flutes with the Friends of Southwold Library and is kindly supported by Southwold Methodist Church and sponsored by Jolly Music. Seats are limited so please book in advance to avoid disappointment. Concert refreshments will be provided and there will be a ‘Donated Book Sale’ from 2.00 – 6.00 in the Methodist Church Hall to help raise further funds for Southwold Library.

‘Flauti Dolci is a recorder quartet/trio based in North Suffolk. They play soprano, alto, tenor and bass recorders, and enjoy playing music from the Renaissance through to modern compositions, and ‘light’ music. The name ‘Flauti Dolci’ comes from the Italian for ‘recorders’, literally meaning ‘sweet flutes’.

‘Waveney Flutes’ is a supportive, friendly and informal flute ensemble for adult flautists in Norfolk and Suffolk that meets weekly in Beccles. The group includes piccolo, alto and concert flute. All sizes of flute are welcome. They perform a wide variety of music and include other instruments wherever possible. Musical leadership is shared within the group.

‘Dorking Flutes’ is a flute choir for adults living in a large area centred on Dorking in Surrey that meets monthly and gives occasional concerts. They play piccolo, concert, alto and bass flutes, sometimes with accompanying instruments. Dorking Flutes includes flute and music teachers and enthusiastic amateurs, some of whom play in local orchestras. Their Music Director is a professional flautist and teacher.
