This week, our Development Assistant, Alicia Grix, has chosen one of our most iconic items – one which changed our knowledge of human history…

I selected my object for #NMSLoves years ago, when I had the Happisburgh Handaxe permanently etched onto my skin. It’s one of the best decisions I ever made, and I feel proud to be part of the organisation that safeguards it.

But why this object? First of all, it’s amazingly old, so old that we struggle to even comprehend how old it is. What does 500,000 years ago mean to us, when even 100 years ago can feel like a completely different world? Yet, it’s a landscape that sparks the imagination, where ancient humans stood alongside mammoths and other megafauna. This object gives us a tangible link to its makers.

Our knowledge of this deep history is in flux, with new discoveries constantly rewriting our interpretations. The discovery of this simple flint tool jumpstarted such a change, leading to further discoveries and revolutionising our understanding of humans in Britain. At the time of my tattoo, this was thought to be the oldest human-made object in northern Europe. Now, it’s a symbol of what is still to be discovered, and the impact one object can have.

And finally, like me, it’s a proud child of North Norfolk (although both of us have defected to other parts of the county). It symbolises to me my love of Norfolk, and the power and mystery of archaeology. Hopefully there are many more discoveries out there waiting for us!

We have done it 🎉😃👏🏻🙌a massive team total of 5277 miles has been covered during the month of June, completing our 5000 Mile challenge “June for Janet” ... our café team, family & friends took on the challenge to cover the miles to raise funds for 2 amazing charities (St Elizabeth Hospice & Art for Cure Breast Cancer charity) in memory of my Mother in Law, Janet, who passed away suddenly at the end of March at the beginning of lockdown. She will be greatly missed here at the café, it is so strange without her here now we are back open, bustling around, keeping us all in order! The challenge has been a great team effort, marking the end of lockdown for the café team and very therapeutic for all involved. We are lucky to be surrounded by such beautiful countryside and I hope the team will continue to get out there no matter what the weather does💚💛thank you so much to everyone who has taken part, love you all and some amazing efforts to raise much needed funds for these 2 great causes ❤️still time to donate if you are able to, would love to increase our total as much as possible & a huge thank you to those who have already been so generous ❤️💜💚

RNLI lifeguard patrols returned to Lowestoft South Beach last month and will be back at Southwold beach from this weekend.
If you're spending time at the beach, please be mindful of your own safety and the safety of others. This includes keeping your distance from other people and using common sense when deciding which area of beach to visit. If it feels too crowded, it is too crowded and we would encourage you to look for somewhere less congested to enjoy.
Anyone planning a visit to the coast should remember the following beach safety advice:
🌊 Have a plan. Check the weather forecast, tide times and read local hazard signage
🌊 Keep a close eye on your family, both on the beach and in the water
🌊 Don’t allow your family to swim alone
🌊 Don’t use inflatables
🌊 If you fall into the water unexpectedly, float to live. Fight your instinct to thrash around and instead lean back, extend your arms and legs, and float

🌊 In an emergency dial 999, and ask for the Coastguard

Following the latest announcement from the Government, East Suffolk Council and East Suffolk Norse are busy preparing for play areas and skateparks to start re-opening from tomorrow, Saturday 4 July.
This includes inspecting all sites to ensure they are safe and clear to re-open and installing new signage to highlight the guidelines which must be followed by users. All sites will be re-opened once this is completed.
Cllr Letitia Smith, Cabinet Member for Communities, Leisure and Tourism, is encouraging families, children, and young people to enjoy the sites safely by continuing to follow the official guidelines.
She said: “We know that many families, children and young people have missed the play areas and skateparks, and we are excited that these can once again be enjoyed by the very people they were built for. However, it remains of uttermost importance that we all continue to play our part in controlling the virus.
“Therefore, I would like to remind everyone, young and old, to continue to follow the Government’s guidelines and any additional guidelines displayed when using our outdoor spaces. If a site is busy and it is not possible to practice social distancing, please consider coming back at another time when it is less busy. Also remember to bring hand sanitiser and use this frequently, and, as a minimum, before and after using any equipment.
“I know it can be hard to explain, especially to young children, but if you are a parent or a guardian of a child or young person, please make sure you have a chat with them about not congregating in groups or using busy sites, being patient and waiting their turns and continuing to follow the guidelines.”Following the latest announcement from the Government, East Suffolk Council and East Suffolk Norse are busy preparing for play areas and skateparks to start re-opening from tomorrow, Saturday 4 July.

There has been a significant increase in those purchasing poultry to keep in the garden, to be able to provide eggs.
If you are considering the same, we would recommend that you have a look at the information provided by the British Hen Welfare Trust, who have a great “Hen Keeping Starter Guide” as well as guidance on hen husbandry: www.bhwt.org.uk/hen-keeping-starter-guide/
If keeping less than 50 chickens there is no requirement to register them, however we would recommend that you do, so that you can be contacted if there is a disease outbreak in your area.
Poultry are susceptible to many diseases and need regular checks. One such disease is avian influenza (Bird Flu) which is a highly contagious viral disease affecting the respiratory, digestive and/or nervous system of many species of birds. Find out more about bird flu and how to spot it, as well as how to register your flock here: www.gov.uk/guidance/avian-influenza-bird-fluThere has been a significant increase in those purchasing poultry to keep in the garden, to be able to provide eggs.
