Halesworth Arts Festival programme 11-26 October 2014

The 13th year of this highly successful North Suffolk Halesworth Arts Festival features 17 wonderful events and two art exhibitions. The events and brief descriptions are listed below. The first two events are in local churches with the rest, along with the art exhibitions, at The Cut Arts Centre in the town.

The Armed Man

HALESWORTH FESTIVAL VOICES & ORCHESTRA

A performance of Karl Jenkins’ THE ARMED MAN with the Voices and Orchestra opens this year’s Festival.

Written for the victims of the Kosovo conflict, the piece was premiered in 2000 and has since been performed more than a thousand times. As the 100th anniversary of the First World War approaches, this profoundly moving work with its powerful message of peace, brings to our Festival a unique and uplifting experience.

BEAUTIFUL SOUNDS IN BEAUTIFUL SPACES

2014 has seen the birth of a truly wonderful female octet, under the direction of Vetta Wise and this concert is  a musical  exploration of the universal themes of Birth & Death in works by Bach, Brahms, Holst, Martini, Schubert, Tavener and others.

Seraphim will sing both a cappella pieces and music for upper voices accompanied by various instruments and organ. The programme will feature the first UK performance of Peter Klatzow’s serene “Three Carols in Honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary”, Poulenc’s haunting and stark “Litanies a la Vierges Noire” and the magical “Syrinx” for solo flute by Debussy.

Two grand legends in the world of folk, present a new collection of traditional songs and instrumentals. For more than 40 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music’s greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. Dave Swarbrick first came to prominence on the folk scene as a young instrumental virtuoso in the Ian Campbell Folk Group.

Patience Agbabi

A BRILLIANT RETELLING OF THE CANTERBURY TALES

Presented in association with The Poetry Trust, acclaimed poet and performer Patience Agbabi presents an inspired remix of all the stories of Chaucer’s Middle-English masterwork in her new poetry book, Telling Tales (Canongate, 2014).

From the Miller’s Tale to the Wife of Bath’s, this boisterous and lyrical collection of tales gives one of Britain’s most significant works of poetry thrilling new life.

The internationally renowned soprano Sarah Fox joins James Burton to perform this specially devised programme which presents the greatest songs written by Cole Porter, who died on this very night exactly 50 years ago.

The duo will mark the occasion by presenting familiar favourites including In the Still of the Night, I’ve Got You under My Skin, Anything Goes, and Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye as well as other Cole Porter gems.

Hear about some of of the frankly bizarre species that grace our planet and find out why TV presenter Nick Baker loves these weirdly wonderful creatures.

Perhaps best known as the presenter of BBC 2’s Springwatch Unsprung, Nick is a specialist in invertebrates and an honorary lecturer at Exeter University where he contributes to a range of events, lectures and seminars for students and staff within the College of Life Environmental Sciences. Join Nick to find out about the weird creatures he has encountered in Paraguay and in other remote corners of the globe.

The year, the Festival has invited members of the Suffolk Craft Society to exhibit some of their work and they are mounting a unique display of largely prints and textiles.
