Your chance to Fly High and learn circus skills from international experts

Norfolk’s resident circus company to host the city’s first ever 3-day international circus convention

Norfolk circus fans will have the opportunity to learn from some of the world’s greatest circus practioners and teachers at Norwich’s first ever aerial and acrobatics convention next month. From Friday 4 to Sunday 6 November Fly High will see international circus professionals, all leaders in their field, convene at The Oak Circus Centre to celebrate all things aerial and acrobatic and share their skills with anyone who would like to attend.

Fly High is the brainchild of Norwich’s resident circus practitioners Lost in Translation who opened The Oak earlier this year as a rehearsal and creation facility for themselves and a training centre for those wishing to learn circus skills. Located in a beautiful grade 1 listed medieval church in the heart of the city, The Oak is the east of England’s only dedicated circus training centre run by professional performers.

The Fly High Aerial & Acrobatics Circus Convention will see world-class trainers from Canada, Germany and Australia arrive in the city to provide coaching to participants of every level, from professional performers to complete beginners. The tutors have coached and performed with world renowned companies and schools including Cirque du Soleil, Ecole Nationale de Cirque, NCCA, Circomedia, Aerial Edge and Circus Alba. It will be three days of  workshops, learning, sharing and above all fun and will have sessions suitable for people of all abilities, from professional performers to complete beginners.

‘We want to really announce the presence of The Oak to people in Norwich and Norfolk and thought that the best way would be to invite our friends to come here to demonstrate their unique abilities and show others how they can learn them too’ said Lost In Translation’s founder Massimiliano Rossetti, ‘Fly High will have something for anyone interested in circus skills, whether as a possible career or just wanting to learn more, from those who already have a grounding in our artform to absolute beginners – and all those in between’ he continued.

The skills on offer include acrobalance, aerial hoop, rope, silk, cyr wheel, cloudswing, hand-to-hand, handbalance, teeterboard, Lost In Translation own speciality Korean cradle (they are Guinness World Record holders!) and more.

Fly High will provide a full weekend of activities including entertainment at Norwich Arts Centre on Friday night. There will be a Saturday evening cabaret at The Oak featuring performances, routines and works in progress from Lost in Translation and associates. A limited number of Saturday night only tickets will be on sale subject to availability. Following the Sunday workshop participants will have the opportunity to perform their new skills or to compete to be crowned Fly High Champion in the Circus Olympics. This will be a friendly competition pitting aerialist against acrobat against juggler to see who is the most versatile of the weekend!

Lost In Translation Co-Director Annabel Carberry commented ‘ We hope that Fly High will both encourage Norwich and Norfolk’s rapidly expanding circus community and help to cement the city’s reputation as a destination for circus creatives.’ Adding ‘By both building on the work by organisations such as Norfolk & Norwich Festival and SeaChange Arts to promote circus over the last few years and also offering an opportunity for all circus providers and participants in the region to come together.’

Single and full three-day passes will allow participants access to all course and entertainment and includes refreshments (and dinner on Friday for Weekend pass holders).
