Norwich BID

Norwich Business Improvement District (BID), which was recently shortlisted for BID of the year 2014, has implemented a new environmental initiative to help businesses save money and increase their recycling.

Norwich BID has worked closely with the business community to understand what they want and their priorities for a new innovative waste and recycling service and the thorough tender process has ensured the new service provider focuses on cost savings, great service and strong management.  The new waste and recycling scheme will be brought to Norwich in partnership with local company MW Whites Ltd.

Norwich BID’s waste and recycling service has already been set up in the Castle Mall and is now available to a huge range of other businesses in the city. Paul McCarthy, Centre Manager, Castle Mall said, “I appointed White’s once the BID identified them as the preferred waste management supplier for our city.  They’ve been responsive to requests, their service delivery has been excellent and all at a significantly reduced cost.”

Norwich BID is confident the new city centre waste and recycling scheme can save businesses money, and has already saved Castle Mall and its many businesses a significant sum of money.  The scheme aims to provide Norwich BID and other businesses in the city with the following services:

  • An excellent recycling service
  • A general waste collection service at a “significantly” reduced cost
  • A reduction in congestion and pollution in the city centre by reducing the number of waste collections on a weekly basis
  • Minimising business exposure to future land fill tax increases

Stefan Gurney, Norwich BID Executive Director, said, “It’s taken us a long time to develop a really great waste scheme for BID businesses.  Working with MW Whites we have developed a nationally innovative project that will deliver cost savings, great service and a well-managed waste scheme.  We encourage everyone to sign up”.

The Norwich BID aims to also dramatically improve recycling rates and under the new system, cardboard, food waste and all dry mixed recyclable goods will all be recycled, with only modest amounts of residual waste being sent to landfill.
