The Mystery of the StarEaters

Norwich Business Improvement District (BID) is to present a live ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ game where you play as a ‘consulting detective’ for the day.

Taking place in Norwich for one day only on Saturday 25 June 2016, this new, one of a kind event allows players to solve a mystery by following clues hidden throughout the city centre.

Over a dozen secret locations (some usually off-limits to the public) are taking part in the game where adventure seekers will be given a ‘casefile’ of information on a mystery and must ‘crack the case’ by following up leads, wherever they might take them.

Casefile: The Mystery of the StarEaters is the brainchild of graphic designer Stephen Blackwell, “As a kid I grew up loving the mystery and machinations of Sherlock Holmes but what I really wanted more than anything was to be Indiana Jones.  What I’ve tried to give players here is an experience somewhere in between the two.”

“As a big fan of escape room games I thought it would be fun to take a similar concept and spread it over a city centre wide scale, essentially gamifying it so that the whole area is your gameplay zone and anyone or anywhere could be part of it.”

“The game itself will take about 2 hours to play but it’ll be running continuously throughout the day so you can stop and start whenever you choose. Just like with the old school computer games, there will be help along the way but you’ll be completely autonomous, deciding where to go and who to speak to.”

Stefan Gurney, Executive Director, Norwich BID said, “It will be great to see the city come alive with super sleuths cracking clues to the mystery.  I’m looking forward to taking part in the adventure trail and using the BID’s free Wi-Fi to be fully integrated and immersed in this new city mystery genre.  We’ll also be making sure to our fantastic group of City Host volunteers are on hand should anyone need advice.”

The story so far

This first ‘casefile’ revolves around the disappearance of a fictional UEA professor who was researching Norwich’s hidden subterranean areas. The investigation quickly spins out a web of intrigue involving and adventure involving a thousand year old legend, a mythical ancient treasure and a shadowy cult at the heart of the city.
