All Aboard the Bungay Battle Bus!

GTUK British Taekwondo Championships

held at Stratford Upon Avon April 25th 2009

Bungay Taekwon-do Club

Another successful medal haul was brought back from the 2009 GTUK British Taekwon-do Championships at the weekend.

Competitors from Bungay Taekwondo-do club based at Bungay High School got up at 5am and travelled to Stratford Upon Avon in the heart of England in order to compete at the largest ever GTUK event and standards and competition were really high, especially as BBC3 were present and filming for a forthcoming documentary.

Fiona Larter (37) once again proved her dominance in the ladies sparring event and achieved a thoroughly deserved gold medal, the 3rd year in a row!

Nidge Bedingfield (aged 54) also achieved gold in the Veteran Male sparring section as well as a bronze for Patterns, his wife Sue (aged 48) won double silver medals whilst their youngest son Kal (aged 12) achieved a great bronze for sparring in a huge junior category.

George Crickmore (aged 14) continued his medal haul of the season with a bronze for Sparring and a thoroughly deserved silver for patterns.

Freddy Hoffman (aged 15) won a terrific bronze medal for sparring in his first ever GTUK competition.

Other students from the club were not quite as successful but did especially well in light of the standards on show, Jenna Akerman (12) came 4th in the junior patterns, Mark Porter (28) came 4th in a tough male sparring section whilst Sophie Akerman (12) won several rounds in the junior sparring section but missed out on the medals.

Clinton Gillett the club instructor and Director of Design Technology at the High School said “National standards seem to be getting better every year and we are raising our game accordingly, it was a shame that many others in the club were unable to travel due to other commitments as the medal tally could have been higher!”
