Bernie Plans Giant Turbines for Holton

Turkey producer Bernard Matthews is holding consultations about plans to erect nine giant wind turbines at plants in Norfolk and Suffolk.

The company said it wants to produce 10% of its own electricity.

Bernard Matthews wants to erect seven 100m (328ft) masts and two 125m (410ft) masts at three locations and is holding the first of several consultations.

The plans have provoked strong feelings among some people living in Weston Longville, Holton and North Pickenham.

Vice-chairman of Weston Longville Parish Council in Norfolk, Ruth Goodall said: “The reaction has been ‘oh my god, here we go again’. There are a lot of people in the village who are quite strongly opposed to it on the grounds of siting and the size.

“Also what we do not know is how they fit in with any future plans that the firm might have on the site.”
The first of the consultations is at St Mary’s Hall in Halesworth in Suffolk on Thursday 11 June 2009.

Another set of plans will go on show at Necton village hall near Swaffham in Norfolk on 12 February.

That will focus on the plans for two turbines at North Pickenham where there are already eight giant turbines built by Enertrag UK in 2006.

A spokesman for Bernard Matthews said: “So far there has been no date set for the public consultation in Weston Longville near Norwich but we’re in discussions with people there.”

The proposed site for two wind turbines at Weston Longville is close to Bernard Matthews main headquarters at Great Witchingham.
