New Black Belts at Bungay Taekwon-do Club
GTUK British Regional Finals 2009

Wicked Weekend!

Bungay Taekwon-do club has had a superb series of successes over the weekend, on Saturday the GTUK black belt grading took place in Coventry and Clinton Gillett (37) the club instructor was promoted to International 4th Degree, which means amongst other responsibilities he gets to wear the black strips down his dobok, whilst Martin Sloan (40) and Lianne Hatcher (18) the club assistants gained their 2nd Degrees, the highest students ever taught by Clinton so far!

Claire Sloan (38), Fiona Larter (37) and Amy Barker (19) all gained their coveted black belts after a gruelling examination involving patterns, sparring and set sparring, self defence, destruction, theory and thesis submissions.

Then on Sunday the club participated in the GTUK Regions’ Tournament in Stratford-Upon-Avon and came away with a fantastic 11 medals and a 3rd place trophy!

Stars of the show included Nidge Bedingfield (55) gaining the gold for veteran destruction and Edward Parker-Jervis (14) winning gold in his sparring division.

George Crickmore (15) won silver for sparring and patterns, George Attwood (19) won silver for sparring, Tom Raven (15) earned a bronze in his sparring group and Sue Bedingfield (48) gained a bronze for her patterns.

Martin Sloan won bronze for veteran black belt patterns and sparring and Clinton Gillett gained silver for black belt sparring and bronze for patterns.

The scores from each region were calculated and it meant that the Eastern region came 3rd overall in Great Britain, beaten only by Scotland in 1st place and the North West in 2nd which is a fantastic achievement considering population densities.

Sophie and Jenna Akerman, Amy Barker, Lianne Hatcher and Fiona Larter all competed superbly but missed out on medals, however they helped us greatly with spirit and comradeship.

The club is currently getting ready for the last grading of the year and the presentation party for student of the year awards but if you want to come along and see us train then we always welcome anyone along.

The youngest students training at the moment are just 6 years old and with the London Olympics in 2012 coming along there is real scope to train to compete.

The club trains at Bungay High School on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7pm with an extra curricular session provided for free to students at the High School on Wednesdays.
