“Colchester Celebrates African and
Caribbean Cultures this October”

This October Colchester will host a rich arts festival to celebrate African and Caribbean cultures and histories. The town’s Black History Month celebration is thanks to financial support provided by Explore Culture One World, and fantastic support from local individuals, community groups and organisations (Fountain Events, CACC and TACMEP), theatres galleries, museums, libraries, and arts venues.

Colchester Black History Month 2010 launches from midday on Saturday 2nd of October with a vibrant African and Caribbean Reggae Market Day at Colchester Academy (formally known as Sir Charles Lucas Sports Centre) Greenstead. This event is supported by Colchester Borough Homes and Explore Culture and will be hosted by Freedom Sounds Sound System, featuring diverse stalls from local businesses and those from further away; African-Inspired fashion and accessories to delicious food from the Caribbean (sample Cicely’s Cakes and Savouries: her fish-cakes and gingerbread cakes come highly recommended), family entertainment and music from Ipswich Youth Steel Band and Still Waters Choir and Freedom Sounds, as well as a fabulous fashion show by Afro-Chic. Carry on until late in the night at Molly Malones Reggae After Party at St. Botophs Circus Roundabout. More music and food follows during the Black History Month launch weekend on Sunday 3rd October with a Soul Food Barbeque from 1pm at Love Bistro at the Minories, with special guest T-Bone on jazz trombone.

Throughout the month of October look out for over 30 events for adults and children in the Colchester area celebrating African and Caribbean cultures and histories through music, film, theatre, visual arts and spoken word. For more information visit www.bhmcolchester.co.uk or call 07990 802 776
