Diss Corn Hall Friday 23 July 2010 7.30pm

Justin Partyka & George Szirtes – in conversation

Acclaimed photographer Justin Partyka has spent nine years photographing the remnants of the agrarian community that was once widespread throughout East Anglia. Commenting on his work, he writes ‘For most people this is a world that no longer exists. It is a place where the identity of the people is intimately shaped by the landscape on which they live and work. Small-time farmers, reed cutters and rabbit catchers, these are the East Anglians – the forgotten people of the flatlands who continue to work the land because the need to is in their blood.’

Partyka will discuss his work – currently showing at the Stables Gallery at Diss Corn Hall – and the themes behind it with the celebrated poet and writer George Szirtes. Szirtes has won many awards for his work, including the prestigious TS Eliot Prize, and teaches at UEA, but will bring his other enthusiasms as a Hungarian-born cricket fan, a philosophiser on wrestling and football, a commentator on speeding nuns and a blogger par excellence to a free-wheeling and entertaining discussion.

The talk will be preceded by a free private view of Justin Partyka’s The East Anglians at
6-7.15pm
