Kiss-me-Figaro

For an example of how the Beccles Public Hall & Theatre has risen in the ranks of top music venues in the area, look no further than the forthcoming visit of touring company The Merry Opera Company at the Hall on Sunday 15th June 2014.

In their latest production Kiss me, Figaro! – nominated for 3 Off West End awards: best male singer, best female singer and best Opera – the soprano diva has hated the handsome tenor ever since he jilted her at the altar – but now he’s returned and wants her back. An evening of love, laughter and classic favourites by Mozart, Handel, Donizetti, Puccini, Monteverdi, Delibes, Irving Berlin and more.

The Director, John Ramster, in his Notes states “The exact nature of Kiss me, Figaro!, the Merry Opera Company’s new show for 2014, is difficult to explain to people. It’s not quite an opera, nor yet a musical or a straight play. As one of the jazz standards in the piece comments about Love, Kiss me, Figaro! is “the oldest, yet the latest thing” – it’s a new piece but it contains music from the last 400 years of opera, Lieder and early 20th century popular song. It’s definitely a virtuosic evening: our talented troupe of singers have to perform and sing in several styles from a filmic naturalism, to comic opera, to high drama, and also cope with some music theatre dance breaks along the way!”

“We’ve had fun playing with the levels of reality in Kiss me, Figaro! – from the names of characters, to rehearsing rehearsals (I found myself staging a music call at one point!), conversations in dressing rooms in costume, people coming out of character while on stage. Along the way we have a little laugh at the opera world’s ways and current fads, from the notion of Director’s Konzept opera to the stylings of the crossover industry, while all the time telling the simple love story of Daisy and Joe, two young singers trying to find their way back to each other.”

As this is a national tour, we are able to offer tickets on sale now from our on-line ticket service or from the Foyer Box Office, at £10 (concessions £9), so don’t miss this opportunity to come and see a top touring show at your local Theatre.
