ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!

With all matches at the club last Saturday postponed due to the wintry weather there was the considerable compensation of staying at home and seeing England beat the mighty All Blacks. What a thrilling and surprise win. Surely one of the biggest upsets in recent sporting history. Which just goes to show one should never approach any match in any sport feeling too confident or without hope as anything can happen! I must say I also enjoyed my first experience of women’s rugby when England completed a famous double over New Zealand. The All Blacks with be out for revenge when they return to Twickenham in November next year!

Just two of the club’s away matches survived last Saturday when the Ladies’ 5ths were beaten by a lucky goal by Yarmouth 2nds when a strike from outside the circle hit a post and rebounded into the net off the goalkeeper and the Boys’ Development did well to draw 3-3 with an older Norwich Dragons side. Myles King put Magpies ahead and after going 3-1 behind a brace of goals by Kieran Peters (our very own KP) gave his side a well deserved draw.

Congratulations to:

a) James Lane on his appointment by the Executive Committee as the club’s Press and Publicity Officer. James’s role will include working with the club’s committees and officers, including team captains, to promote the club with the local media and existing and potential sponsors.

b) The Men’s and Ladies’ 1sts on both finishing second in last weekend’s East Indoor Championships in Cambridge. These were very useful preparations for the national indoor league over the first two weekends of January where both teams will be in Division 1 with the Men playing in Bristol and the Ladies in Nottingham.

c) The U10 and U12 Girls who won the Norwich City Minis last Sunday and to the U10 Boys who came second with the U12 Boys in fourth place.

This week

After last weekend’s bad weather, which also claimed the Men’s O50s match against Ipswich on Sunday,  it is hoped we will be luckier this Saturday when the Men’s 1sts return to outdoor action and centre stage at Weybread when they entertain West Herts (2.15). The teams drew 2-2 earlier in the season at Watford so Magpies will hope to go one better this time to retain their league leadership going into their national league indoor season. Also at home on Saturday will be the Ladies’ 5ths and 6ths who take on Sprowston 2nds (12.30) and Sprowston 3rds (12.15)  respectively in what are likely to be tough matches and the Men’s 5ths who face Gorleston (4.00) and the Men’s 6ths who play Lowestoft Railway 2nds (1.45). The 5ths lost 2-0 away to Gorleston early in the season while the 6ths will be meeting their opponents for the first time. Also at home will be the Ladies’ 2nds who have a friendly match against Norwich City (3.15). Away from home the Men’s 2nds will be looking to continue their good run of form when they face Wisbech (2.30) who beat them 2-1 earlier in the season and they will be encouraged by the dip in form of the Cambridgeshire side in recent weeks.  Meanwhile the Men’s 3rds, after their excellent win over Bury St Edmunds two weeks ago, will be in the mood for more points away to City of Peterborough 4ths (1.00) who are just above them in the league as will the Men’s 7ths who are away to close rivals North Walsham 2nds (4.00). The table topping Ladies’ 3rds are away to Thetford (12.00) while the Ladies’ 4ths, who are just four points behind them, are away to Evergreens (10.15).

Please see the Home Page of the website for the full list of all this coming weekend’s matches which include the U16 Boys (on Saturday) and the U18 Boys (on Sunday) playing in their respective East Indoor Championship at the University of Essex.  Good luck to all our teams with fingers crossed for good weather.
