Invaluable sponsorship support once again

As the new season proper draws ever nearer I am pleased to announce that our main sponsors are kindly supporting us once again. They are Hunton Legg (R.G.) Ltd, Kitchen Sense of Harleston, Banham Graham, Larking Gowen and www.WaveneyValleyBlog.com. Our thanks are due, respectively, to Mark and Annie Legg, Val and Sue Tolhurst, James Banham and Murray Graham, Brian Pring and Nigel Bedingfield.  Their support and that of all the other friends of the club who help us by way of pitchside advertising boards and advertisements is invaluable in the general running of the club and in the development of our facilities.
If you know of any business which might be interested in having a pitchside advertising board please let me know.
Congratulations to:
·         Gareth Furlong, last season HMHC’s young player of the year, on his selection to play, in a very busy summer, for Wales U18s (as captain), for Wales U21 in the Celtic Cup in Belfast and in the EuroHockey Junior Nations Tournament in Vienna (where the team finished second to Scotland gaining promotion to the Championship) and for the Wales senior squad for the Test series against the USA in Cardiff.
·         England on reaching the semi-finals of the Women’s World Cup in Argentina where they will meet, almost certainly, Holland on Thursday. The England coach is ex-Pelicans HC member Danny Kerry.
·         Richard (Ratty) Alexander, ex-HMHC, on his selection to play for England in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India between 3 and 14 October.
News and comments in brief:
·         Some enjoyable inter-club games were played at Weybread last Saturday and our thanks go to Philippa and Julian Taylor for their organisation of the BBQ and Graham Clark and Mary Wright for the running of the BBQ. Two sausages and a roll for £1 was excellent value!
·         This Saturday sees most of our teams in friendly action as they continue to prepare for the new season with ten of our teams playing at home. Please see the Home Page of the website for the full list of matches.  Meantime the two 1st teams are away on Saturday following their encouraging results last weekend when the Ladies beat Northampton 3-1 and Cambridge City 1-0 and the Men lost 3-1 and drew 3-3 with Canterbury, last season’s Conference East champions. This Saturday the Ladies are at the PLUM tournament at Old Loughtonians and the Men play Staines and St Albans at Chelmsford. The Men are in action again on Sunday playing Bishops Stortford at home at 1.00pm.
·         Best wishes to all our team captains for the coming season including those in charge for the first time, namely Melissa Hunter (2nds), Kristina Erith (4ths), David Ling (1sts), Matt Brand (3rds), Will Main (5ths) and Murray Graham (7ths).
·         The Men’s 7th team replaces the Men’s Veterans due to the lack of players available for the latter team. The Veterans will, however, continue to play in the England Hockey Masters Over 40s Cup and they play Norwich City at home in the first round on Sunday 10 October.
·         Tom Hart has unfortunately suffered a bad knee injury playing mixed hockey during the summer and could well be out of action for many months.
·         Mariette Rix who played a starring role for South Africa in their 2-1 defeat by England in the Women’s World Cup at the weekend played in goal for Ipswich against Magpies at home last season in a game made memorable by monsoon-like rain which halted proceedings for some fifteen minutes.
·         When members pay their annual sub (and if relevant your training fee) they will receive a copy of the club handbook to treasure! I thank Irene Bicker and Merna Merrett and everyone else who provided information for inclusion.
Next social event for your diary please
Curry-Oke Night (Saturday 2 October, 7.30pm).

With kind regards and best wishes
