Mozambic Music Night – 23rd October 2010 – DanceEast, Ipswich

Deodato Siquir, a rising star of world music from Mozambique, will be playing in Ipswich for just one night on Saturday 23rd October at DanceEast.

Deodato Siquir’s debut album ‘Balanço’ earned a place in the top ten world music list in many critic’s eyes. It’s a vibrant mix of traditional Mozambican marrabenta and modern jazz rhythms, ‘full of catchy riffs, pleasant vocals and expertly played solos.’ (Tom Orr, World Music Central).

The evening is in aid of PlaygroundMoz, part of the Karibu African Women’s Support Group in Ipswich, which aims to build a children’s playground in a rural village in Mozambique.

As a developing country, Mozambique receives foreign aid in many areas such as health and education. But children’s recreation spaces are still sadly overlooked. And yet such spaces are vital, to keep children active and healthy, and to teach them social skills. Playgrounds also act as a focal point for the whole community, building up social cohesion.

The organiser of the concert, Esmeralda Pelembe-Marsh, said “Every village in the UK has a playground. But you can travel the length of Mozambique – 1500 miles! – and not see any at all.”

Deodato Siquir will be playing with Celso Paco and other Mozambican musicians. They are currently based in Sweden, and are here in the UK just for this concert. They will be singing in English and Portuguese, with strong backing from their African djembe drums.
