SUPPING ON PICKLED NELSON

Did you know that after the Battle of Trafalgar Nelson’s body was preserved in a barrel of wine and brandy?

On the journey home it’s said that the crew of HMS Victory drilled a hole in the barrel and drank a sip of the contents while saluting their hero. This is where the term Tapping the Admiral (a sneaky drink) comes from.

Just one of the fascinating facts about Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson contained in a new Nelsons app, Discover Nelson’s Norfolk, which is free to download from Wednesday 6 August 2014.

The app has been developed by The Forum, in Norwich, as part of its commitment to celebrating local history and heritage.

The Forum’s Chief Executive, Tim Bishop, a self-confessed Nelson buff, said,

“A lot of the free exhibitions and events we have here at The Forum have a focus on Norfolk’s rich and varied heritage.

“We like to provide new ways in which people can explore local history and culture, particularly using digital technology.

“This new app is a fun way of finding out more about Nelson and exploring the county he was proud to call home.”

SCURVY, ROTTEN TEETH AND MALARIA

Nelson’s childhood, love life, health, battles and death make fascinating reading.

Did you know that he went to sea at the age of 12? That he suffered from sea sickness all his life and endured several bouts of malaria? That he lost most of his teeth due to scurvy? And that it’s a myth that he wore an eye patch?

The app takes the user on a tour of Norfolk, with photos, facts and walking trails in places linked to Nelson.

The story starts at Nelson’s birthplace, Burnham Thorpe, where many of his family are buried.

I AM MYSELF A NORFOLK MAN

In North Walsham he attended the Paston School. In Norwich, a city Nelson held close to his heart, there are many stories attached to the historic buildings.

And Great Yarmouth is where he gave a famous speech from the balcony of the Wrestler’s Inn, not long after victory at the Battle of the Nile.

He addressed the cheering crowd with the words,

“I am myself a Norfolk man and glory in being so.”
