Ruthless Finishing Too Hot For Wold To Handle

Romford And Gidea Park 51 – 22 Southwold

In all fairness for most of the game Wold matched RGP in most departments except one main one, and that was ruthless finishing. Wold huffed and puffed but when they got five metres from the RGP line they just couldn’t blow the RGP house down.

When RGP had chances to break, they broke in numbers and their direct running style and seemingly endless runners backing up the ball carrier proved to be Wold’s downfall and too many times they had a simple overlap out wide to make try scoring relatively easy.

That was the only real difference between the two sides along with a lot of losses in the lineout which Wold will have to work on at training to ensure they win their own ball when electing to kick to the corner from penalties.

Through the entire game in general Wold’s pack were dominant but lots of good possession just could not be turned in to points on the day.

The game started well for Wold with a Ben Felton penalty and soon after Des Brett ripped the ball for a turnover and the ball quickly went out to the right for Adam Smith and Cemil Duruk to combine before putting Ritchie Thickett over in the corner for the first try of the game and Wold were up by eight points.

By half time however RGP had scored four tries, despite Wold having as much possession and threatening on several occasions, but RGP.

were well on the way to victory at 26 – 8 as Wold failed to add to their score and just could not stop the home sides rampaging style.

Another RGP try followed ten minutes in to the second half but then Jamie Jenner finally took advantage of a long period of Wold pressure just short of the RGP line, stormed over the line and ran round under the posts for Wold’s long awaited second try which Ben Felton converted to make the score look a little more respectable at 33 – 15.

Two RGP penalties followed to put the game pretty much out of Wold’s reach at 39 – 15 but then it was game over when six Wold missed tackles allowed the diminutive RGP winger to run right through the centre of the pitch for a fine individual try which was converted.

A frantic last three minutes saw RGP score a comical try when Wold ripped the ball in the loose and the ball came gently out the back of the ruck on the Wold side but the only person to spot it was a RGP forward who gleefully picked it up and ran unchallenged to the try line much to his and the crowds amazement. Freaky or not it was yet another five points but Guy Blades timed his interception well a minute later as he ran between the RGP centres and it was another seven points for Wold.

Wold nearly scored in the dying seconds when Guy Blades and Jonny Utting combined, and it would have given Wold a bonus point for their fourth try but they were stopped just short of the line and final score remained at 51 – 22 and Wold came away empty handed from their afternoons efforts.

MOM for Wold,  Jamie Jenner at No 8, a storming performance.

Southwold II were at home to Crusaders II in a top of the table clash in the Eastern Counties Greene King 3 North league, Southwold won 38-0.
