Sportspark, based at the University of East Anglia, has donated £621 to a local voluntary organisation which teaches essential life saving skills to school children. Throughout February, UK’s national heart month, Sportspark’s charity spinner scheme has been raising funds for Heartstart Medics Norwich.

The charity spinner scheme is run in conjunction with Archant Norfolk, through which Sportspark customers have the chance to offer small donations in return for a copy of the Eastern Daily Press or Norwich Evening News. Every charity that benefits from the monthly appeal is chosen by Sportspark customers and members of the community.

Heartstart Medics Norwich is a programme backed by the British Heart Foundation, which teaches lifesaving skills to teachers to enable them to teach school children as part of lessons. Pupils learn about the risk factors for heart disease and the importance of having a healthy lifestyle. Skills taught include CPR, as well as dealing with other emergencies such as choking and serious bleeding. The interactive programme is free to schools and suitable for 4-18yr olds.

Jeanne Reynolds, Heartstart Scheme Coordinator, said: “Children are our life savers of tomorrow. It is important that they have the opportunity to learn these important life-saving skills and have the ability to help others. What greater reward is there than to be able to save someone’s life.”

Director of Sport, Phil Steele, added “I’m very pleased to support Heartstart Medics. They are doing great work in our schools with teachers and children. This money will help them to develop their programme and continue teaching knowledge of heart disease and valuable first aid skills which hopefully stay with children for life. I’d also like to thank the Sportspark customers who are still providing us with their generous donations which enable us to continue helping local groups and charities.”
