The Theatre Royal will be on Rural Tour around Suffolk once again. This time the Theatre will be working in partnership with up-and-coming local company Spinning Wheel Theatre, as they present Jim Cartwright’s fast-paced comedy Two in twelve venues around the county—including some local boozers!
Set in the cosy world of a typical Suffolk pub, Two will see two actors bringing to life the landlord, landlady and twelve other of the pub’s colourful regulars as— fuelled by the friendly atmosphere and the continuous pints pushed into their hands— they reveal intimate insights into their lives that they simply can’t leave at the pub’s doors.

Alice in Wonderland
Wednesday 1- Thursday 2 May
Based on Lewis Carroll’s famous stories Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, Ballet Theatre UK is proud to present an enchanting adventure beautifully told through the magic of dance, delighting audiences young and old. Featuring original choreography by Artistic Director, Christopher Moore and a spectacular score by Tchaikovsky, this full-length story ballet combines comic charm and virtuoso dancing with beautifully hand crafted costumes and sumptuous stage sets.
La Traviata
Wednesday 8- Thursday 9 May
One of Verdi’s most popular operas, La Traviata tells the tragic story of Violetta, a fallen courtesan doomed to love a man she cannot have and fated to die in poverty, young and heartbroken. Set against the backdrop of Nazi Germany, Opera UK’s new interpretation of this popular classic maintains the melodious beauty of Verdi’s celebrated score. With beautiful music performed by a chamber ensemble, stylish designs and stunning performances, this truly is an unmissable opera.
An Audience with Michael Parkinson
Friday 10 May
Join Sir Michael Parkinson, CBE – legendary broadcaster, journalist and author – for an evening of talk about his life and career. This evening promises stories about the rich, famous and infamous, as well as a fascinating insight in to the life of the doyen of British talk show hosts, from his beginnings in the English pit town of Grimethorpe, his early days in journalism, through to his rise to fame with the advent of television.
Hot Mikado
Tuesday 14 – Saturday 18 May
Based on The Mikado by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. Originally produced at Ford’s Theatre, Washington, D.C. Frankie Hewitt, producing director. These amateur performances are given by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Ltd Hot Mikado is The Mikado with a difference, giving new life to the Gilbert and Sullivan classic with its nonstop action and dance numbers, and all the songs you remember from the original but not exactly as you remember them! The hapless Ko Ko is still pursuing the vain Yum Yum, the strolling player Nanki Poo is still attempting to flee the clutches of the elderly Katisha, and The Mikado himself is still impatient for the next execution. Pooh Bah, Pish Tush, Pitti Sing and Peep Bo are all there, and if anything twice as energetic and tuneful. A real family show!
Phillip Pullman’s
The Firework- Makers Daughter

An explosive musical adventure based on the story by Philip Pullman Lila desperately wants to be a Firework Maker like her father. But when he refuses to teach her, Lila runs away from home to discover the three gifts of firework making for herself. With the help of her friends, Chulak and Hamlet, the love sick elephant, Lila faces pirates, tigers and the terrifying Fire Fiend on her perilous quest. Will Lila find out what the three gifts really mean? A vivid re telling of the award-winning children’s book by Philip Pullman, this new family opera, with a libretto by Glyn Maxwell, is brought to life by magical puppetry and music by David Bruce that sparkles with humour and musical fireworks!
Charley’s Aunt
Thursday 23 – Friday 24 May
It is 1892 and dashing Oxford undergraduates, Jack and Charley are preparing to propose to Amy and Kitty, but a chaperone is needed or the girls will refuse their lunch invitation. As luck would have it, Charley’s aunt is arriving from Brazil (where the nuts come from) and will happily serve the purpose. However, a telegram declares that her trip is delayed so their plans are in disarray until they hit upon the idea that Lord Fancourt Babberley, their good friend, should put on a frock and assume her identity. But, madness ensues when Charley’s real aunt from Brazil (where the nuts come from) finally arrives. All is well in the end after a breathtaking chase, a musical interlude and an absurd number of marital engagements. We are very excited to welcome this new production of Charley’s Aunt, a play which had its premiere Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds in February 1892.
