HALESWORTH – Secretary of State for Transport Patrick McLoughlin MP visited Halesworth Area Community Transport (HACT) this morning to announce it has been a successful applicant to the £25 million Community Transport Vehicle Fund.

HACT applied in January 2015 to the Department of Transport for funding for a 16 seat coach- built disabled accessible vehicle to put in service which will be available for hire to schools and community groups which can be driven on a Group B license. The new vehicle will also be used to train drivers to achieve their MiDAS certification.

The Secretary of State met HACT secretary Doug Gray at the HACT office at Halesworth railway station and the minister spoke with volunteers and drivers before being boarding a bus to make his announcement.

Doug Gray said afterwards “this is down to a wonderful team of volunteers who work tirelessly to provide vital transport to all of our community”.

There is a pressing need across the community transport sector for lighter vehicles which can be driven on a ‘Group B’ (normal car) license as the numbers of potential volunteers who are eligible to drive under the ‘D1’ classification are being reduced as age and health takes its toll.
