Healthy Ambitions Suffolk

Too many mince pies? Then walk this way!

If you’ve overindulged during the Christmas period and feel in need of an energy boost, then a series of special health walks taking place across the county could be just the antidote you need.

The “Stepping out in Suffolk” programme is offering everyone the chance to get out and about and boost their activity levels in the New Year. More than 100 walks have been arranged across the county, and offer the perfect way to gradually reintroduce exercise after the indulgence of the festive season.

Organised by Suffolk Coastal District Council in partnership with Healthy Ambitions Suffolk, the health walks are the suitable for everyone, regardless of their age or fitness level. All last between thirty and ninety minutes and are graded according to their difficulty, and give people the chance to socialise while getting more active at the same time.

Sally Hogg, head of health improvement partnerships for NHS Suffolk, said: “Many of us overindulge during the Christmas period as we celebrate with family and friends. But come the New Year, thoughts turn to exercise and fitness as we set our resolutions for the coming 12 months.

“Walking is the ideal exercise for so many different reasons. Not only is it free, but it’s an easy way to increase your levels of activity gradually and absolutely anyone can do it – regardless of their level of fitness. It’s also the perfect excuse to get out and about and enjoy some of Suffolk’s beautiful countryside and coastlines which, in turn, can have a positive effect on mental health.

“So why not make this year’s resolution one which you’ll keep by coming along to one of the Stepping out in Suffolk events?”

Cllr Sherrie Green, cabinet member for community health with Suffolk Coastal District Council, said: “The Stepping out in Suffolk walks are perfect for anyone who is keen to reintroduce some gentle exercise following the rigours of Christmas.

“They’re ideal for anyone who has not been active for a long time or who is recovering from illness or surgery, and are a great way to build confidence while also meeting new friends.”

The Healthy Ambitions Suffolk strategy aims to make Suffolk the healthiest county in England by 2028 by cutting the number of preventable deaths and helping people to live a healthier lifestyle. Currently it has three main strands – children and young people, businesses and older people. More strands will be added in the future.

A wide range of partner organisations are working together on the initiative, which is driven by Suffolk Strategic Partnership. More information is available at
