The NHS Suffolk Apprenticeship Scheme celebrated its success at its first ever awards ceremony, which recognised outstanding apprentices and also the support of partner organisations involved in the scheme.

Created in 2009, the NHS Suffolk Apprenticeship Scheme is designed to meet the future healthcare needs of the people of Suffolk by developing a well-qualified workforce over the next 10 – 15 years. Already 14 young people aged between 16 – 18 years have enrolled in apprenticeships and training placements covering the disciplines of dental nursing, estates, I.T. and business administration.

The awards event, held at Otley College near Ipswich, saw a number of apprentices being given recognition for their hard work and success in their roles.

Julie White, NHS Suffolk Apprentice Co-ordinator said: “The apprenticeship scheme is an important part of the planning for the future needs of health care in Suffolk. It enables NHS Suffolk to develop a workforce that is highly skilled and trained to deal with health care issues. It is also a valuable opportunity for young people to get a great start to their career.”

Over the next year apprenticeships will be used to train existing NHS staff who would benefit from gaining a nationally recognised qualification or young people aged 16 – 18 who could be offered a training placement in the NHS in Suffolk.

Senior Business Training Consultant at Otley College, Tracey Lucas, said: “We were delighted to host this very special event on behalf of the NHS. The day was all about celebrating and championing apprenticeships and this is a subject that is very close to our heart.

To receive a certificate of recognition from the NHS for the work that we have achieved together – in terms of training apprentices – was very special, and we are looking forward to building on our partnership over the coming months and years.”
