A Sidecar Named Despair!

A black comedy  by Pat Whymark & Julian Harries

Touring East Anglia – 13th September to 26th October 2019

A Sidecar Named Despair!

Take a ride up the comedy freeway with a tale of mobsters, missing gems and a mashed-up motorbike.

“Lively and most entertaining…The play has a wonderful flow…These talented actor-musicians often chop and change characters with ease. The humour is great and there are plenty of ‘one liners’ to add to the chuckles”  (Robert Wright, reviewing our 2017 tour of The Old Curiosity Shop in the Eastern Daily Press)

Dick’s quiet suburban life is shattered when his brother Julian returns suddenly from The States, for “health” reasons. But his shady American “associates” have unfinished business with him, putting both their health at risk. Their dad’s old motorbike and sidecar, which Dick has been restoring, might come in handy as their getaway vehicle!

Following out acclaimed 2018 touring production, The Mariner, we present a black comedy with original music by Pat Whymark & Julian Harries and starring Julian and Dick Mainwaring – reprising the characters they created for Common Ground’s 2013 comedy, Stuff In The Attic (“Pat Whymark’s latest play is very funny indeed” East Anglian Daily Times, “Good music and plenty of well-judged comic touches” In Suffolk, “Moments of pure farce alternate with real conflict” What’s on Stage). Expect “The Odd Couple” versus the Mob!

Running time – 2 hours (including interval)

Julian Harries & Pat Whymark are the creative team behind  Fenland Screamer, Stoat Hall, The Mystery of St Finnigan’s Elbow & many more Eastern Angles Christmas shows, and it is that sense of playfulness that we hope runs through all our work. As an actor Julian has appeared in Eastenders, Detectorists, Spies of Warsaw, Doctors, and performed with The Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal National Theatre and in the West End.
