A Talk in Bungay by Nick Watts
and other events

On Wednesday June 30th 2010 I’m giving a talk at the Chaucer Club at 7.30pm.

This is intended to pass on to townsfolk some of what I have learned from 18 months research into issues like resource depletion and economics.

My belief is that our entire civilisation is perilously close to major and long-term problems because of climate change, an energy crisis and economic mismanagement. I also believe that there has been a scandalous lack of honesty and integrity (essentially, in the pursuit of money) amongst the elite who control the mainstream media, global politics and the banking/finance system.

This I have called the Conspiracy of Silence, and I think it is crucial that more people know about some of the issues involved so they are better placed to decide on how to influence the future of themselves, their loved-ones and their communities.

Despite a call for national and global action, I fear the status quo (aka business-as-usual) will take a lot more pressure to shift course than I am able to mount! The alternative – as prescribed by the Transition movement, of which our town is included via the voluntary group Sustainable Bungay – is to act locally to mitigate against some of the percieved threats. There is so much positive action which can be taken that benefits everyone in the community, and that is why it is important to give this talk.
