ARTS ON THE ROAD

A multi-arts tour to celebrate Sundown Arts’ 10th anniversary

Essex-based voluntary-run arts organisation Sundown Arts is 10 this year, and is taking its unique brand of multi-arts performance comprising spoken word, live music, and comedy theatre on a tour of Essex and East Anglia, where it cut its teeth on the events circuit.

From the back room of a tiny pub in 2003 to packing out the Union Chapel with Frank Sidebottom in one of his final shows, Sundown has spent the last 10 years creating a unique brand of friendly, lo-fi gigs where the audience get free gifts and the style is DIY-cabaret.

Sundown’s artistic director Jo Overfield says “This is a real chance for us to showcase how we’ve grown as producers over the past 10 years. We pride ourselves on our diverse line-ups at every show we do, and the fact that we’re multi-arts makes us stand out from the usual music-only or ‘just spoken word’ nights.”

All the events on the tour are just £5 to enter, and further information can be found at www.sundownarts.org. To contact Director Jo Overfield, email [email protected] or telephone 07759 626708.

Performer profiles

The Lucky Strikes hail from Southend but produce a sound that is very much America-inspired; the heady combination of blues and rock and roll makes them one of Southend’s most popular bands.

Ed Rome (The Big) is an acclaimed writer, recording artist and producer who has supported Easy Star All Stars, The Beat and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. His last album received praise from BBC6’s Steve Lamacq, naming it the ‘best reggae album of the year’.

Gideon Conn & Donna Maciocia bring ‘Highlights and Perceptions’, two EPs by two extremely talented musicians. Donna, a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Edinburgh is a one-woman juggernaut of sound, playing piano, guitars, ukulele and kazoo with the occasional beat-box on the side. Gideon is a Mancunian blending folk and hip-hop with a warm depth of sound and unique performance style.

M.G.Boulter is the frontman of The Lucky Strikes, carving out a successful solo career and playing alongside the likes of Simone Felice, Martha Wainwright and Conor Oberst. An Americana-tinged delight.

Old Trunk is the brainchild of actors Sadie Hasler and Sarah Mayhew, who pen original pieces based on anything from cult TV of the 1970s to female writers that have inspired them. Truly energetic theatre.

Adam Felman composes music for films, documentaries and theatre, is currently Head of Music at Concrete Rose Productions and is a regular at The Edinburgh Fringe soundtracking sketch group Casual Violence! A truly unique performer.

Simon Blackman is one of Essex’s finest poets, creating wry comedic gems on everything from hitchhikers and snails to girls from the fish and chip shop.

Keely Mills is one of Peterborough’s shining poetic stars, Poet Laureate of Peterborough for 2009 and has performed at many different events from the Houses of Parliament, freaky outdoor festivals to WI luncheons. Keely is a creative producer who organises ‘Speakeasy’, one of Peterborough’s premiere poetry nights. She has been described as ‘Dawn French on acid’.

Liz Bentley is a must-see comic poet who brings a touch of the absurd and surreal to her performances. Armed with a Casio keyboard and ukulele, Liz tells tales of the NHS, life with MS, and her Essex upbringing as a Girl Guide who broke the rules.
