Forthcoming events at Beccles Library

A series of well-known personalities are appearing at Beccles Library over the next few months.

Olympic Torchbearer and local MP to attend Summer Reading Challenge presentation at Beccles Library

Olympic torchbearer Eddie Graver and Waveney MP Peter Aldous will be congratulating children who have completed this year’s Summer Reading Challenge at Beccles Library.  The event takes place on Sunday 14 September from 11am to 12.30pm.

The ceremony will involve all children who have read six library books for the challenge at the library, being presented with their certificates and medals by Peter Aldous and having a chance to meet Eddie who was the 2012 British junior champion and 2013 British junior international champion target pistol shooter. Eddie was also a London 2012 torchbearer and anyone coming along to the event can have their photo taken with a replica of the Olympic torch.  Photographers are welcome to come along to this event.

Wednesday 24 September – Nigel Planer

Nigel Planer – actor, comedian, novelist and playwright will be giving a talk and Q&A session at Beccles Library on Wednesday 24 September.

Nigel was a founder member of the London Comedy Store and is perhaps most famous for his portrayal of hippy student Neil in The Young Ones. He’s appeared in many TV and film roles and also written comedy books, novels, plays and scripts. He’s currently appearing in new BBC One comedy drama Boomers.

Nigel will talk about his life and career and take questions from the audience. He’ll also sign autographs. Doors open at 6pm and Nigel will be talking from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Tickets cost £10 available and will be available from the library.

Tickets are £10 and available from the library and the Kulture Shock book shop in Beccles.

Wednesday 5 November – Alison Weir

Successful historical novelist Alison Weir will be talking about her latest book and answering questions. She has written books such as Elizabeth of York, the First Tudor Queen, Richard III & the Princes in the Tower and, most recently, The Marriage Game: A Novel of Elizabeth I. She’s sold more than a million books in the UK alone.

There’ll also be music from historical musicians Pearl in the Egg. Tickets are £5 from the library or Kulture Shock. You can redeem the ticket value against the cost of any Alison Weir book from Kulture Shock.

Thursday 6 November – Richard Coles

Meet priest, 80s pop star, writer and broadcaster Richard Coles as he performs a book reading and takes questions from the floor.

Richard was one half of the Communards, who had a number one in 1986 with Don’t Leave me this Way. An openly gay priest living with his civil partner, Richard was ordained in 2005. He’s appeared on Have I got News for You, Newsnight Review and Songs of Praise, and you’ll also hear him on Radio 3′s Nightwaves.

Richard is talking from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Tickets are £10 and are available from the library and Kulture Shock. You can also get a copy of Richard’s memoir Fathomless Riches for just £4.99 when you produce a ticket.
