The Legend of the Rood

Saturday 24 May and Sundays 1 and 8 June 2014

Hugh Lupton, the renowned storyteller, has been commissioned to write a contemporary Mystery Play Cycle, based on the ancient LEGEND OF THE ROOD.

There will be four plays, based on Biblical stories with each performed in a different location in the vicinity of Bergh Apton church.

To ensure that the audience and cast reach the four sites, wandering minstrels will mark the routes, which will meander through rough woodland and over green lanes.

Hugh Lupton will be the narrator and the 50 or so actors and musicians, many of them performing for the first time, will be drawn from 11 villages around Bergh Apton, south of the Yare.

This will be a real community event. Bring your own picnic to have in the Garden of Eden, before the cycle starts at 1.30pm.

It will end at about 6pm with an interval for tea. Each play will last up to forty minutes.

Bergh Apton lies just south of the A146, 7 miles SE of Norwich.

This event has been funded in part by the Arts Council England.

Any profits made from the performances will go towards the schools participating: Alpington and Bergh Apton VA, Thurton and Rockland St Mary.

Visitors are encouraged to bring picnic lunch to eat in the Garden of Eden. The performance will take place mainly outdoors. Bad weather will not be a cause for cancellation. Quite a bit of walking will be involved over rough terrain. Wheelchair access will not be easy. It is recommended that all bring a portable seat. Wear sturdy shoes and warm, waterproof clothing as necessary. A map of how to find the car park at the church will be provided.
