Betrayal by Harold Pinter

Local theatre group, Foolhardy Actors Company, is set to present their first drama of 2016 at Beccles Public Hall on Thursday 10th March at 7.30pm – Harold Pinter’s brilliant and enthralling Betrayal . This production follows their acclaimed production of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale.

“On the surface, Betrayal is about an affair but as with all Pinter’s plays, there is so much more going on,” says Foolhardy co-founder and producer Sharn McDonald.  “The Winter’s Tale was a huge production for us, Betrayal is much smaller in scale but no less vast in the scope and range of its emotions.  We want to produce work that challenges us and forces us to continually raise our game”..

Director Will Isgrove said; “Betrayal is probably Pinter’s most accessible work, it’s a great introduction to his style and themes.  If you’ve never seen a Pinter, or have been a little uncertain what to expect, this is a great opportunity to discover and experience his genius.  Betrayal is very layered and honest; it touches on emotions we’ve all felt.  The dynamics between the characters are so well observed.  We’re very lucky to have such a talented cast to tackle this.  It’s about how our loves and our losses build up and warp over the years, and about how complex life can become. It’s really insightful but also incredibly funny and engaging.”

The cast, all experienced local professionals agree.  “Everything just works,” says Jonny Goddard, last seen on the Seagull stage as Edmund Blackadder and here making his debut with Foolhardy.  “It’s a real challenge for an actor as there is always so much going on beneath the surface.  Structurally it’s a challenge as the story is told in reverse order; we begin at the end of the affair and work our way back to the beginning.  But knowing how it ends only enhances the experience.”

Foolhardy was set up in 2012 and has quickly developed a reputation for producing theatre of the highest standard.  They have also delivered drama sessions for young people in foster care and produced a season of plays to raise awareness of mental health issues.
