The British Baton Twirling Sports Association is returning to Sportspark this weekend for a national competition. The Twirlfest National Team Championships are being held on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd October 2011 in the Keith Nicholls Arena at Sportspark, based at the University of East Anglia.
This is the fourth year that the Twirlfest National Team Championships have been held at Sportspark. Athletes from England and Scotland will be competing against each other to find the best teams and Duo’s in the country. They will showcase their twirling and dance skills and intricate choreography.
On Saturday 22nd October the Twirl Challenge event will take place comprising Solo Twirl, Fancy Strut, Two Baton and Duo. There will also be the Three Baton Event, followed by Freestyle Teams and Groups and lastly the Club Event. On Sunday 23rd October the Dance Twirl Teams and Groups will take the floor first, followed by the Pom Pom Teams and Groups.
American Karissa Wimberley, Silver Medallist in the World Championships in Norway and who won first place in the Individual Freestyle event, will be attending the whole of Twirlfest. Karissa will be demonstrating her skills in a display at the end of competition on Saturday and for the remainder of the week will be imparting her knowledge of the sport onto the competitors.
Dennis Goodwin, National P.R.O. from BBTSA said: “All of our competitors work really hard in the run up to this event. They put in hours or training to take part in the Twirlfest National Team Championships. It’s a great experience for our competitors. Many of our top athletes are selected to compete in the European and World Championships.”
Members of the public are welcome as spectators on payment of a £11.50 entry fee to BBTSA at the entrance to the competition hall. Entry to the Sportspark is free of charge to this event. Doors will open at 9am on Saturday 22nd October and the competition starts at 10am.
