Bungay Choral Society

Spring Concert

Bungay Choral Society will be presenting a stella offering at the Spring Concert at 7.30 on Saturday, May 8th 2010 in St Mary’s Church.

Some very different works will be performed – Henry Purcell’s much loved Dido and Aeneas, and two equally popular Coronation Anthems by G.F Handel. At the end of the concert there will be a Wine and Cheese Party in the Church to raise funds for the Society.

For this special occasion – the May Concerts in their beautiful setting are always very special – the 60 voice choir will be supplemented by four soloists (including our local and rapidly becoming well known soprano star, Lucy Harvey); a string quintet; harpsichord and organ.

Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell is short opera (it runs for under an hour) but it has everything, including a passionate love affair between the heroine, Dido, Queen of Carthage and Aeneas, the handsome Prince of Troy; dancing and merrymaking; a hunting scene; a thunderstorm and sorcery and witchcraft. That is, in addition to the much adored
heart-rending aria (the famous “Dido’s Lament”) sung by the dying heroine,
Not a dry eye in the house!

Handel’s “Zadok the Priest” and “My Heart is Inditing” are two of four anthems composed for the coronation of George II in 1727. “Zadok” has been performed at every subsequent coronation.

Tickets: CONCERT: Adults – £8 (accompanied school children free).

WINE AND CHEESE PARTY – £3.
