SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN (12A)

Director: Malik Bendjelloul. Sweden/UK 2011. 86 minutes.

Compelling documentary which unfolds like a thriller. Two South Africans set out to discover what happened to their unlikely musical hero, a Mexican-Native American who made a couple of unsuccessful records in 70s America and disappeared. Forgotten in his homeland, his music was smuggled into South Africa where he became more famous than Elvis or The Beatles, and the voice of white revolt against apartheid.

Hugely entertaining, well made documentary that unearths an astonishing musical find. One of the best films of the year. Matthew Turner in ViewLondon.

MONSIEUR LAZHAR (12A)

Director: Philippe Falardeau. Canada 2011. 95 minutes. In French with English subtitles.

Engaging drama set in Montreal. Algerian immigrant Bachir Lazhar (Mohamed Fellag) is hired to step in after the sudden death of a primary school teacher. While helping his pupils deal with their grief, his own recent loss is revealed. Impressive performances from the amateur child actors and from Fellag, a comedian and himself an exile, add subtle humour to this perceptive film.

MONSIEUR LAZHAR is good. Really good. Ann Hornaday in The Washington Post.

Only the most obstreperous delinquent could fail to be charmed. Xan Brooks in The Guardian.

THE ANGELS’ SHARE (15)

Director: Ken Loach. Starring: Paul Brannigan, John Henshaw, Roger Allam. UK 2012. 101minutes.

A heist movie with a difference from the acclaimed British director of KES. Glaswegian young offender Robbie narrowly escapes a prison sentence but finds the going tough when he attempts to reform and be a good father to his new baby. While carrying out his Community Service he hatches a plan to carry out the perfect, victimless crime. Joyful and frequently hilarious comedy tempered with the director’s trademark realism.

This is British comedy at its warmest and most pleasurable; cask strength, unfiltered and neat.

UNTOUCHABLE (15)

Directors: Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache. France 2011. 112 minutes. In French with subs.

Life-affirming French comedy based on the real life friendship between a rich quadriplegic aristocrat (Francois Cluzet) and his streetwise ex-con carer (Omar Sy). UNTOUCHABLE depicts a camaraderie rooted in honesty and humour between two people who would seem to have nothing in common. Bittersweet, moving and with a wicked sense of humour.

Believe the hype – this irreverent take on disability is charming and uplifting.

Dalya Alberge in The Guardian.

A ROYAL AFFAIR (15)

Director: Nikolaj Arcel. Denmark 2012.128 minutes. In Danish, German and French with subtitles.

Superbly executed historical drama set at the Danish court in the 1760s. English born Princess Caroline is sent to marry the mentally ill King Christian VII, a man she has never met. Isolated and lonely after her marriage, she is drawn into a relationship with a fellow outsider, Struensee, the King’s reformist and influential German doctor. Together they influence the king to enact social reforms. Absorbing and visually exquisite, this is as much a conspiracy thriller as a romance.

Arcel gives this true story the shape and bite of a well-crafted fiction, and its political themes are every bit as stirring as the romance. Robbie Collin in The Daily Telegraph.
