Bungay’s First Car-Free Day
Monday 22nd September 2008

Towns and cities throughout Europe will be holding car-free days on Monday 22nd September and Bungay is no exception.

Although the campaign is primarily aimed at cities, Sustainable Bungay felt that we probably use the car more than we need to in our rural areas too, so on Car Free Day people are being asked to leave their cars at home for journeys of less than a mile and travel by bike, foot or public transport to town, work or school.

To mark the occasion, after school and before everyone in town walks or cycles home, there is to be a Bike-In at the Butter Cross at 5pm on the day.

People can bring the flyers that will be distributed around the town and at the schools to be validated with a Sustainable Bungay stamp. These will entitle people to 10% off everything at M P Cycles in Flixton Road for the remainder of the week.

There will also be a ‘Spot the Bike’ competition. Waveney District Council are providing a map of the Bungay area where, hidden from view, is a bike. The person with the pin closest to the bike wins a £100 voucher, kindly donated by Cosseys Funeral Service, which can be put towards any bike at M P Cycles.

The Town Mayor, John Groom told the local press: “This is a great initiative which will encourage people to get more exercise as well as saving fuel.” He added: “I shall be making some of my meat deliveries by horse and carriage on Monday!”

Sustainable Bungay are hoping that everyone will enter into the spirit of the day and do all they can to walk, cycle or travel by bus – and leave the car at home. They are also hoping that it won’t rain!
